The 35-year-old was sacked in February after a poor run of form which saw The Canaries go from first to eighth in The Championship.

The Scot, who was speaking to BBC Scotland in an in depth interview, says many of his team were no longer at their peak, and perhaps should have moved on.

"We needed to start afresh. A lot of players had been there for longer than five years.

"I think 13 of the 24 players in the first team squad were over 30 [years old], and when we went up last time they were 28, which is significantly different. That's arguably when you're in your peak for a player.

"The one thing I probably blame myself for is in the summer I re-signed all the players to get us promoted, because they had in the past.

"What I probably should have done was take more time and look to alter some of the squad at that stage, which I didn't do."
