    A decision on whether to go-ahead with plans to restore Great Yarmouth's Winter Gardens will be made by councillors this evening.

    The iron and glass building on the seafront has been derelict since it was closed in 2008 over fears it could collapse.

    It's been used as a dance hall, entertainment venue and children's fun play area since 1904.

    The council is seeking funding of £200,000 towards first stage repairs and a business proposal to allow it to bid for more funding.

    Another £500,000 is being supplied by the Heritage Lottery Fund for this initial work.

    The overall cost of the renovation is projected, external at £12,400,582.

    The Northern Distributor Road (NDR) may be on schedule but it's not on budget and today the county council's policy and resources committee "noted" a £20m budget increase for the project.

    It means the authority will be paying the overspend and although it has £7.25m set aside, it now has to find £12.25m.

    Councillor Martin Wilby says the contract signed was a "shared risk" one, which means it must honour the overspend, brought about by additional work to divert utilities and issues with a railway bridge at Rackheath.

    Mr Wilby added that a fixed-price contract would have seen the cost set higher to include a 20%-30% overspend.

    He believes the road, which is on target for completion by March, is value-for-money, will cut congestion and open up easier access to the north of the county.

    Plan to stop weapons and drugs getting into a jail in Norfolk don't go far enough, according to the Prison Officers Association (POA).

    Bosses at HMP Wayland near Watton want to put a gate across a footpath which runs alongside the site to stop contraband being thrown over the perimeter to inmates.

    The path is used by local people who would be given an access code to enter the gate and the area.

    Glyn Travis from the POA says new technology makes it harder to put a stop to so called "throw-overs" with some people using drones to drop goods into the jail.

    "The gate being proposed is a good thing but the reality is will it prevent what we consider what many governors call 'throw-over Mondays or throw-over Thursdays'?" he says.

    Norwich City supporter David Thornhill had a day to remember at Carrow Road when he stood in as an emergency fourth official during the 1-1 draw with Preston.

    David, who is known as "Spud", is a qualified referee and was pressed into action after an injury to one of the assistant referees caused a 10-minute delay to the match.

    The Norwich head coach Daniel Farke was frustrated by the delay which came as his side were awarded a free kick.

    "In earlier times you could play football with a referee and two linesman. Perhaps I am a bit old fashioned but I thought we could play it without a problem," he said.

    The RAF Lakenheath airman killed when her car hit a tree at Elveden in the early hours of Friday morning has been named as Hayley Reynolds, 21, from Indiana.

    Airman First Class Hayley Reynolds had been stationed at Lakenheath with the US Air Force since April 2016.

    Col Evan Pettus, 48th Fighter Wing commander, said: "We are deeply saddened by the loss of Airman Reynolds, and send our sincerest condolences to her family and friends at this difficult time."

    Thanking the emergency services for their response to the incident, he added: "As the days get shorter and colder, we continue to stress driving safety measures to our airmen and families."
