  3. Coronavirus: Confirmed cases in the East of Englandpublished at 08:08 British Summer Time 7 April 2020

    There are more than 4,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the BBC East region according to the latest data from Public Health England, external.

    The actual number of people with the respiratory infection is believed to be much higher though - as only those in hospital and some NHS staff are currently tested.

    A total of 5,373 people, confirmed to have had the virus, have died across the UK.

  7. Police issue warnings over weekend parties and BBQspublished at 17:24 British Summer Time 6 April 2020

    While most people listened to advice not to travel to tourist spots and parks over the weekend, Suffolk Police, external said it had to deal with many reports of those who ignored social distancing guidelines by visiting other households for barbecues and parties.

    The police received 119 calls from members of the public reporting people ignoring the restrictions on Saturday and a further 142 calls on Sunday.

    Over the two days, a total of 178 warnings were given to those in public or gathered at other addresses.

  8. Wildlife charity organises Grand Nationalpublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 6 April 2020

    Suffolk Wildlife Trust staged its own version of the Grand National at the weekend, after the real one, which had been due to take place in Liverpool on Saturday, was cancelled.

    The Trust's version used snails rather than horses.

    The wildlife charity said on its Facebook page, external that it used natural resources for its hurdles.

    "Why not hunt for natural resources and search for snails and have a go too?" the post said.

    "Remember to handle your racers with care and return them where you originally found them!"

    An exhibition marking the visit to Essex in 1945 of youngsters who had survived the Holocaust during has been postponed until next year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

    The Boys: Holocaust Survivors in the Epping Forest District was due to open in May at Epping Forest District Museum and will now be on display from 8 May 2021 to 4 September 2021.

    Holocaust survivors came to Holmehurst hostel, Loughton, after the end of World War Two in December 1945, therefore rescheduling the exhibition in 2021 will commemorate 75 years since the boys’ arrival.This exhibition will tell survivors' stories.

    Nigel Bedford, portfolio holder for communities and partnerships at the council, said: "We feel postponing the exhibition means we can still tell the survivors’ stories with the care, respect and compassion they deserve."

    A small independent music venue has a new project called Lock East to support local artists by sharing video content and their tracks.

    The Smokehouse in Ipswich has had to close due to coronavirus lockdown, so the venue is offering them a new platform for performance.

    A number of museums have been trying this out - including the Getty in Los Angeles - which challenged people to recreate some of its art collection, external using stuff they have lying around the house.

    Back in Cambridge, staff at the Fitzwilliam are working on a virtual tour of some of its exhibits enabling people to enjoy them from the comfort of their armchairs.

    A pub in North Norfolk selling take-away meals has been reported to police for allowing customers to eat them in its beer garden.

    Norfolk Police received 160 calls reporting people who others believed were ignoring social distancing guidelines by visiting other households on Saturday and a further 198 calls on Sunday.

    Warnings were given to 51 people including those at a household in the Broadland area having a party where all guests were sent back to their own homes.

    Assistant Chief Constable Julie Wvendth said: "Our biggest concern is the number of people who have attended other households, particularly for barbeques or parties.

    "The government guidelines are clear. Joining friends and family is a big risk of spreading the virus and damaging the NHS’s ability to manage patient care."

    New social care beds have been made available in Northamptonshire to free up hospital space during the coronvirus pandemic.

    The 140 beds have been identified by NorthamptonshireCounty Council, external at both private and council facilities in a bid to keep hospital capacity at manageable levels.

    Extra beds have also been secured at St Andrew’s Healthcare mental health service, meaning patients who were using 43 rooms at Foster Ward, Daniel Rambaut Ward and Althorp Ward at Northampton General Hospital have been able to move on, freeing up beds for potential emergency use.

    Katie Fisher, chief executive at St Andrew’s Healthcare, said: “As a charity with roots in Northampton we’re very happy to help in any way we can. Providing these extra care beds allows us to give something back to the community in Northamptonshire as well as easing the pressure on both the NHS and the council during this pandemic.”

    The message read: "To the guys and gals in blue, we thank you. Keep up the good work."

    In this tweet the HQ staff, road police team and the armed response unit said "thanks" in return.
