    A former Labour MEP for the Eastern region has tweeted that he has caught the virus.

    Richard Howitt was first elected as a Euro MP in 1994 representing South Essex.

    The electoral system changed and he then represented the whole region from 1999 until 2016, when the country voted to leave the EU and he stepped down.

    Medical students in Norwich have been providing free childcare to NHS medics who are busy trying to tackle the spread of coronavirus.

    Trainee doctors, nurses and therapists at the University of East Anglia (UEA) have had their courses put on hold due to the national lockdown.

    They have offered free childcare for key workers, external so staff can continue working despite school and nursery closures.

    The group Helping Hands East Anglia is part of a national movement to bring together medical students and families of healthcare workers.

    Volunteers have been given exemptions from the lockdown.

    Student Tanya Ta said: "We’re just trying to help those who are providing so much help for others in the most effective way we can."

    Chelmsford City Racecourse could be used by the emergency services to deal with the coronavrius outbreak.

    A spokeswoman for the course said it has been visited by professionals to ascertain whether it was a suitable location for any of the functions they carry out.

    "The racecourse owners are keen to assist where they can as the racecourse is very much part of the local community," she said.

    A disused property has been refurbished in a week to provide urgent accommodation for rough sleepers.

    The owners Babergh District Council, external worked "round the clock" to repair and decorate The Lees in Sudbury.

    Essential appliances and furniture has been brought in and the first seven households moved in on Monday.

    Councillor Jan Osborne, cabinet member for housing, said: "It is testimony to how council staff and local business have worked together during a time when we are facing so many challenges in being able to complete this project in just five days.

    "It’s excellent to now be able to offer somewhere safe for people sleeping rough, staying in night shelters or assessment hubs, who didn’t have a secure home or somewhere safe to self-isolate if required."

    A construction company has donated 1,000 protective masks to Basildon Hospital.

    Lemon Groundworks Solutions, external, based in neighbouring Wickford, has urged all construction companies across the UK to donate any personal protection equipment (PPE) they can.

    Chris Challacombe, head of operations at the company, delivered the masks and said staff told him they were like "gold dust".

    Another company spokesman said: "The construction industry is still open, like we are, but most businesses are on significantly reduced trading and thus can afford to donate a vast majority of their PPE.

    A town in Norfolk has set up a "kindness help hub" to support local residents in need.

    The project in Harleston is being supported by the local church and town and South Norfolk councillors.

    The team of volunteers is prepared to help vulnerable and elderly people with shopping, prescriptions, friendly contact groups, phone calls and dog walks.

    The group has also set up a dry food store and will distribute supplies to those most in need.

    A police officer has stopped two people who had driven from Tottenham to go fishing on the Essex coast.

    PC Andy Long tweeted that the pair "believed it was essential" to go to Holland Haven near Clacton as they were "fed up indoors".

    The rural and heritage crime officer directed them back home after explaining the law.

    Special constables in Wellingborough have said they are "proud to be assisting" community groups in Northamptonshire to get care packages out to help those who need them the most.

    The boxes of goods, which include bread, fresh fruit and vegetables, are being distributed throughout the county.

    Sheesh restaurant in Essex has been delivering 1,000 meals a day to hospital workers.

    The barbecue restaurant in Chigwell, which has a strong celebrity following, had previously been donating takeaway boxes to NHS workers on a collection basis.

    The restaurant started delivering meals to hospitals in order to "avoid gatherings" and posted about it on Instagram, external.

    A "big thank you" has been given to residents of St Albans who have kindly donated toiletries such as shower gel, shampoos and conditioners.

    They are for NHS staff who work across hospitals in Watford, Hemel Hempstead and St Albans.

    Tributes have been paid to a 26-year-old Cardiff man who has died after his partner said he "lost the battle against coronavirus within a week.

    Josh Youngman was described by his partner Charlotte Mills on social media as having previously been healthy.

    She wrote on Twitter: "Please take this seriously. No one is invincible."

    Mr Youngman was the son of the Reverend Chris Youngman of Whitefriars Church in Rushden, Northamptonshire.

    In a statement, the church said everyone there was "deeply saddened and shocked".

    Ms Mills posted on Twitter: "I love you. I thought you were the one that I was going to spend my life with."

    She later tweeted: "Please read this. It’s not just the old and the vulnerable, it’s everyone. #COVID19, external#StayHome, external."

    We all need a bit of cheer at the moment, so that is exactly what Lucy Murray, from Milton Keynes has done.

    She has created "The Cheerful Little Letter Project", a pen-pal group set up for children to send letters and drawings to residents of care homes who are isolated from their families.

    In just two weeks she has matched 617 residents across 14 care homes, and has a waiting list of other care homes who want to join in.

    "The project is going so well so far," she said.

    "The children have been so excited to send their post, some have also received their replies and thank you cards already."

    Anyone can get in touch and join via the group's Facebook page, external, she added.

    A number of food parcels are being delivered to the most vulnerable people in Bedfordshire.

    The county's fire and police services are handing out the packages, which include tea, tinned goods and milk.
