    The charity that Captain Tom Moore is raising funds for has called him a "true beacon of hope".

    NHS Charities Together, external praised him for getting more than £12m worth of donations from walking 100 times round his Bedfordshire garden.

    His original goal was £1,000, but the number keeps on going up.

  3. Guard of honour for Captain Tompublished at 09:33 British Summer Time 16 April 2020

    When Captain Tom Moore completed his 100th lap of his Bedfordshire garden, he was surrounded by the media, but also a Guard of Honour by soldiers from 1st Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment.

    The 99-year-old, originally from Keighley, in West Yorkshire, trained as a civil engineer before enlisting in the Army for World War Two, rising to captain and serving in India and Myanmar, also known as Burma.

    So far he has raised more than £12m for NHS Charities Together, and the money keeps on coming in, and crashing the donation page.

    The latest figures were released by the government , externalshowed that there was an increase of 128 deaths in the East, bringing the total to 1,424.

    A 99-year-old World War Two veteran who is walking 100 laps of his garden before he turns 100 has now raised £12m for the NHS.

    Captain Tom Moore originally wanted to raise £1,000 for NHS Charities Together by completing the distance.

    But he has hit 12,000 times his initial target, thanks to donations from more than 600,000 people online.

    Captain Moore, who relies on a walking frame, aims to complete his 100th lap at his home in Marston Moretaine, in Bedfordshire this morning, live on our Breakfast programme on BBC One. You can watch the programme live here.

    The former Dean of the School of Health and Social Care at the University of Essex has returned to work at the NHS after an 18-year break.

    Vikki-Jo Scott, a specialist critical care nurse, stood down from her job in December and was planning on starting a PhD, to then return to the classroom.

    "Instead, she has spent two weeks in training, before starting 13-hour shifts at the hospital where she trained and worked before moving into academia," the university said.

    "We salute you, Vikki-Jo, and all our frontline heroes."

    Heidi Seldon said they had lost a third of the people they look after at Philia Lodge care home in Peterborough.

    A project for children to help curate a coronavirus time capsule has been launched in Suffolk.

    Called 'The art of being 2m Apart' Suffolk's Engagement Hub is running a competition for young people encouraging them to express and share their feelings about this unprecedented time.

    Children ave been encouraged to create artwork, music or write about reflecting on daily life, ways they are adapting, managing hopes and fears and also advice for future generations if they face a pandemic or other significant period of change.
