    Cpl Eddie Griffin, 14, from the town's Imperial Youth Band, external played trumpet, leading into police sirens being sounded and blue lights going on in tribute to the NHS, emergency services and caring professions.

    An A&E nurse has made sure the name badge on his scrubs shows his love of Luton Town.

    David Smith, a nurse at Barts Health in east London, has a number of single-use signs to put on his uniform to show patients his name.

    He said he been "very subtle" to drop his love of The Hatters in.

  4. VE Day celebrations moved from May to Augustpublished at 09:44 British Summer Time 17 April 2020

    Celebrations to mark VE Day, the anniversary of the end of World War Two in Europe, have been moved from May until August in Bedford.

    Events in the town have been postponed to "protect the health and well-being of the public, organisers, and military personnel and veterans", Bedford Borough Council said.

    Commemorations were due to take place on 8 May, but will now be held on 15 and 16 August.

    Robin Thomas, from Bedford Royal British Legion, said: "I hope the public will understand why we have taken this decision; these events take organisation and work, and with the ongoing uncertainty of how long this may last and the vital need to keep people safe, we feel this is the right decision.”

  5. 'Secret venue' turns blue in NHS tributepublished at 09:22 British Summer Time 17 April 2020

    Another secret venue has been turned blue to thank the NHS and key workers for their hard work during the coronavirus pandemic.

    Anglia Ruskin University's Young Street building, in Cambridge, was the third in the city to go blue as part of the #LightItBlue campaign at 20:00 yesterday to tie in with the Clap For Carers event.

    The building is home to the faculty of health, education, medicine and social care, where it is used for teaching nursing and midwifery.

    Prof Nigel Harrison said: “It is an opportunity for ARU to pay tribute and to say thank you, to our NHS partners, whose courageous and compassionate staff, together with our students, are working so hard to fight against the coronavirus pandemic.”

    Just three weeks ago, St John Ambulance cadets in the East of England came up with a "banging" idea to cheer us up.

    Luke Stevenson and his friends asked members to make up some dance moves to Taylor Swift's Shake It Off.

    They rose to the challenge and the video has now gone live.

    "Great work. Thank you to everyone who got involved", he said.

  8. Latest figures: Confirmed coronavirus cases in the Eastpublished at 08:41 British Summer Time 17 April 2020

    The official number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the region has now topped more than 8,000, according to Public Health England, external, an increase of 320 cases on the previous day.

    Note: Confirmed cases only include those testing positive for the virus.

    In the UK as a whole, the number of confirmed cases has reached more than 100,000. A total of 13,729 people confirmed to have had the virus have died.

    The country came together on Thursday evening to show its support for the NHS and key workers by taking part in the fourth Clap for Carers.

    Banging, clapping, singing and shouting happened around people's homes at 20:00.

    In Bedfordshire, a special one-minute's silence took place outside Bedford and the Luton and Dunstable hospitals to remember Mary Agyeiwaa Agyapong, a nurse from the L&D who died on Sunday.

    Yesterday we brought you the news that a Royston dance school, Miss G's Academy of Performing Arts, external, was taking part in a 12-hour dance marathon to raise funds for the NHS.

    It started at 07:00 on Wednesday and finished at 19:00.

    A junior doctor at Watford General Hospital has been wearing a photo of herself so patients can see the face behind her PPE.

    West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust shared the photo of Rebecca with the image of herself on her gown and said it was a "fantastic idea".

    The trust said it "ensures that all our patients can identify who is caring for them".
