    Northamptonshire Police have launched a radio advert and a poster campaign to tackle 'modern slavery' and human trafficking in the county.

    Human trafficking is a growing crime in Northamptonshire and officers are asking people to look out for the signs victim’s might display.

    Northampton Town have confirmed they used a £10,000 loan from Northampton Trust Supporters' Trust's 'fighting fund' to pay non-playing staff.

    Chairman Kelvin Thomas, who took over after the money was paid, said it was "really appreciated".

    The loan has not yet been paid back, but the Trust told the BBC this is "not a problem".

    Mr Thomas said he has had several conversations with the Trust over how to best use the remaining £27,000 of the Crowdfunded cash. The Trust has launched a consultation to decide how the money should best be spent.

    Northampton Town's under 18s coach Craig Hinton is to leave the club, external to take up a position with the Football Association in 'coach education'.

    Former Cobblers defender Hinton has looked after the under-18 squad at Sixfields for the last two and a half years.

    "We are sorry to see Craig go, but this is a great opportunity for him and we wish him well," said Academy Manager Trevor Gould.

    Northamptonshire is one of only five areas in the country to have more than 10 under-performing secondary schools.

    The latest league tables put Weavers Wellingborough among the worst, while Brooke Weston in Corby is the best in the county.

  10. Adrian Goldsmith trial: Court hears how detective hit wife with a mallet with 'absolutely no effect'published at 16:15

    A police detective accused of murdering his wife in March last year said the scene at their Wootton Hall Park home had been "carnage".

    Stafford Crown Court heard police interviews with Adrian "Otis" Goldsmith in which he said he had been a victim of domestic violence.

    He told officers that on the day of this wife's death he picked up the mallet and swung it at the back of her head after she had stabbed him.

    He said: "The weird thing is it had absolutely no effect, she turned around aghast...it didn't stop her in her tracks. I thought I hit quite hard and it would have the desired effect. This is the first time I have ever hit a woman in my life, honest. It was a look of shock. I dropped the mallet...you could see the hate, the red mist."

    The case continues.

  11. Adrian Goldsmith trial: Court hears detective admitted hitting wife with a batterypublished at 16:08

    Stafford Crown Court today heard police interviews with Northamptonshire police detective Adrian "Otis" Goldsmith in which he said he had hit his wife with the battery "until she stopped" as he said she was so strong.

    Mr Goldsmith, accused of murdering his wife Jill, said she had tried to stab him between the legs - something which had been a "game changer".

    He had told officers: "I was so vulnerable, this was a do or die". The case continues.

    Police detective Adrian "Otis" Goldsmith, on trial at Stafford Crown Court accused of murdering his wife Jill, said he had been stabbed a couple of times after she came at him with a knife.

    In a series of police recordings, Mr Goldsmith had told detectives he had grabbed his wife in a great big hug and they had fallen and rolled about on the floor while he tried to grab the knife.

    He said: "I just sort of smothered her, I'm not trying to kill my wife, I'm hoping this is going to stop."

    Mr Goldsmith said his wife had smacked her head against a wall and hit herself on the back of her head with a mallet because she was "going mental"on cannabis.

    He had told officers he was scared of his wife, who weighed 6st 9lbs. He said she had lashed out at him with kicks and punches like an "unsophisticated windmill". The trial continues.

    Police detective Adrian "Otis" Goldsmith, on trial for the murder of his wife Jill, said she had been smoking large quantities of cannabis - and that after a row he had threatened to tell her parents.

    In a series of recorded police interviews read out at Stafford Crown Court, Mr Goldsmith told police he had defended himself because his wife was psychotic with cannabis and had threatened him. He said it was "do or die".

    Mrs Goldsmith had been found dead at the pair's home in Wootton Hall Park on 26 March last year.
