    Northamptonshire Safeguarding Children Board - sitting at a serious case review into the death of Baby R this morning - revealed several people had raised concerns about the welfare of other children living with the mother of the nine-week-old baby.

    They heard how the father of the first two of her five children - who did not live with the mother - had raised concerns about his children's welfare.

    They attended school in dirty and damp clothes, smelled of urine, had repeated bouts of head lice infestations and complained repeatedly of not having been given breakfast - but the school took the mother's word that they had been fed.

    A mother whose nine-week-old baby died after they slept together on a sofa had already been warned of "the dangers of co-sleeping", a review has found.

    The boy - referred to as Baby R in a serious case review into his death - died in December 2014 in Northampton.

    Northamptonshire Safeguarding Children Board said the mother slept with the baby on the sofa so as not to disturb her partner upstairs. Its review found her other children were victims of "recurring neglect".

    Northampton's Royal & Derngate, external has announced the stars of its Christmas pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk.

    Simon Webbe, from boy band Blue, will play the title role of Jack Trott. He will appear alongside Ashleigh Butler and her dog Pudsey, who come from Wellingborough and rose to fame after winning Britain's Got Talent. Ashleigh will play Princess Apricot.

    The panto opens on 9 December.

    The X1 bus between Welingborough and Kettering is not running currently due to a breakdown. Engineers are trying to get it working again.

    A minute's silence is to be held this morning to remember the victims of yesterday's explosions at Brussels Airport and Maelbeek metro station, which killed more than 30 people and injured about 250.

    This morning we've been highlighting a protest against a 400% rise - up £72 on last year to £96.98 - in council tax for Desborough Town Council.

    More than 750 people have signed a petition.

    The council tax we end up paying is made up of amounts from different organisations and will depend on which council tax band your home is in. This is what people in Desborough living in a 'Band D' property will pay.

    Northampton Saints, external full-back Ben Foden says he's looking forward to the better weather that spring should bring them, as they move into the last five Premiership games of the season.

    Saints slipped to fifth after losing to Exeter last weekend, but have enjoyed a good run of form in recent weeks.

    He said: "I think the first, eight, nine or ten games, especially at home it was always windy and rainy and horrible conditions so the Saints faithful were a bit disappointed by how we were playing the games, but now it's firming up a little bit."

    There was a big win for Kettering Town, external in the Southern League Premier last night.

    They beat Stratford Town 3-1 at home, with all the goals coming in the second half from David Popa, Spencer Weir-Daley and Wilson Carvalho.

    The win puts them within four points of the play-off places. They're eighth in the table, but have two games in hand on many of the teams above them.

    One of Northamptonshire's MEPs, who was in the European Parliament at the time of yesterday's attacks in Brussels, has said she believes the open border policy needs to be looked at.

    Emma McClarkin said terrorism is "in the heart of Europe, in Brussels".

    "We all have to face up to the fact that it's alive and kicking here," she added. "That we have to take very serious measures to make sure we can tackle it and absolutely we need to make sure we are monitoring how people are travelling in and around Europe and that we're not making it easier for terrorists to slip under the radar."

  10. Oundle playing field petition to be presented to governmentpublished at 09:13

    A 4,000 strong petition objecting to county council plans to sell off part of a school playing field in Oundle will be taken to Parliament later this week. It will be submitted to the Department for Education, external for final consideration over whether the land can be sold for development.

    Northamptonshire County Council, external had intended to sell off the whole field at Oundle Primary School, external to fund the transition from a three to two tier education system, but following strong local opposition, compromised by agreeing to retain a quarter of it.

    Campaigners say despite promises nothing would happen to the land for at least five years, they were surprised by a recent consultation asking for their views on the sale of this land, and on another field in the town - Fletton Field.

    More than 750 people in Desborough have signed a petition against a tax rise of more than 400%.

    Council tax bill

    While most of the council tax bill goes to larger councils, parish and town councils can add a precept which applies to the part of the council tax that goes to them. In a band D home in Desborough, it means a rise of £72 to £96.98 a year.

    The town council say the money is needed to invest in things the public want - like a skate park. Those behind the petition say more consultation is needed and no solid plans are in place.

    Meanwhile, traffic is slow on the southbound A508 in Pitsford in the roadworks area at the High Street junction.

    Traffic is also slow on the southbound M1 at J15 for the A45 at Northampton.
