It was as recently as 2007 that Charlton Athletic were in the Premier League and still have an impressive infrastructure, with their stadium The Valley and its 27,111 capacity.
However, last month Charlton were relegated to League One - the same league Northampton Town were promoted to, making the clubs direct rivals.
Belgian businessman Roland Duchatelet took over Charlton as owner in January 2014 and fans have criticised his running of the club, even staging a protest at Saturday's final game of the season.
Jose Riga resigned after that game - the fifth manager since Duchatelet took over.

If Chris Wilder is going to talk to Charlton and get certain promises he's going to get what he wants to improve the football club, then he could possibly take it.
Charlton is big club, with a big stadium and a big following. I don't want him to go, because I want Northampton Town to go as high as possible, but my gut feeling is that if it's right, he's going to go.
Northampton Town chairman Kelvin Thomas has told both Chris Wilder and Charlton he wants a "quick decision" over whether Wilder will leave the Cobblers for their League One rivals.
The Cobblers have given Wilder and assistant Alan Knill permission to speak to Charlton, and Thomas said if they do go the successor will take over "a very strong, stable club with an excellent group of players", describing it as "a very attractive job".
Northampton Town chairman Kelvin Thomas said he would be "very sad" to see Chris Wilder and Alan Knill go, but admitted the Cobblers "would not be able to match both the salary and the playing budget" of Charlton.
Mr Thomas continued: "We have already turned down some interest from other clubs, but after discussions this morning I respect their decision to meet Charlton."
"My relationship with the chairman and the fans is going to make this a very difficult decision, but I do feel at this stage of my career it is one I need to explore," said 48-year-old Wilder, on the decision to speak to Charlton about the vacant managerial role.
Jose Riga resigned as Addicks boss after their relegation to League One.
Wilder's assistant Alan Knill has also been given permission to speak to Charlton after a clause in his contract was also triggered.
Northampton Town boss Chris Wilder is set for talks with Charlton Athletic.
Wilder, who yesterday joined the team on an open-top bus parade through the town as they celebrated the League Two title, joined the Cobblers in January 2014.
Northampton Town confirmed Wilder had been given permission to enter talks with the newly-relegated London side.

While temperatures are set to hit 22C (72C) today with bright sunshine in Northamptonshire, if you suffer from hayfever then, we're afraid, you might want to take some medication...
