    Plans have been revealed for a major new retirement village in Daventry.

    A consultation meeting is taking place today so local people can find out more about the proposal for the Middlemore Estate.

    The Continuing Care Retirement Community will include an 83-bed care home and a building with nearly 80 apartments and facilities like a clinic, hairdressers, shops and a bar. It will be similar to the St Crispins Retirement Village in Northampton (pictured).

    The developers say it'll employ more than 250 people and become the region's flagship retirement village. The consultation event is at Daventry Leisure Centre until 18:00.

  4. Special constable who died in motorcycle accident 'a complete superstar'published at 17:04 British Summer Time 19 July 2016

    Rushden-based special constable Amanda Wood, who died in a motorcycle accident in Spain yesterday, was also a volunteer at the Nene Wetlands.

    Louise Tiffin from the wildlife group paid tribute to her saying: "Amanda Wood was a complete superstar and a truly inspirational woman to be around. 

    "Amanda worked tirelessly for the good of her community and volunteered countless hours of her time to help us make a success of Irthlingborough Lakes and Meadows. 

    "All who knew her at the Trust are devastated by the news we have received today, and send our heartfelt thoughts to all of her friends and family."

    The Northamptonshire Telegraph reports the popular woman, based in Rushden, died in a motorbike accident while riding from Portugal to Spain on holiday yesterday, external.

    Northamptonshire Police has confirmed all the children injured in the bus crash last week in Oundle have now returned home, but the driver of the car which collided with the bus is still in hospital.

    Nine children were taken to hospital after the school bus tipped onto its side after colliding with a car on Cotterstock Road on Thursday.

  8. Woman suffers life-changing injuries after assault in Northamptonpublished at 15:58 British Summer Time 19 July 2016

    Police say a woman has suffered life-changing injuries following an attack in the Blackthorn area of Northampton.

    A man was also seriously injured in the incident, described by officers as an "isolated attack", which happened last night in Harefield Road.

    An altercation broke out between the two victims and a group of six or seven males, thought to have been in their late-teens.

    The man and woman were taken to hospital in Coventry.

  10. BBC One drama star's 'dream' is performing at Northampton's Royal Theatrepublished at 15:39 British Summer Time 19 July 2016

    Star of BBC drama New Blood, Mark Strepan, said he got the acting bug at school at Campion in Bugbrooke, citing his "great teachers, Mr Holt and Miss Jones" who taught him drama.

    He said it took him four years from leaving school to get into drama school in Oxford, in which time he worked for Northamptonshire Police, the Royal and Derngate Theatre and Northampton Borough Council.

    He told BBC Radio Northampton the town is a "beautiful location" for filming and that he would try and convince writer Anthony Horowitz to write part of the next series of the London-based crime drama in Northampton.

    Mark said there is a great "creative mix" in Northampton and his "dream" would be to perform on stage at The Royal Theatre, saying he went there as a boy "and can still remember the smell of it, it's a beautiful theatre".

    Mark Strepan, from Northampton, has been speaking to BBC Radio Northampton about starring in new BBC One drama New Blood.

    He said when he got the script from writer Anthony Horowitz he thought it was "awesome".

    He said the character he's playing, Stefan Kowolski, is part Polish, and in real-life his mother is Polish, so he decided to "use what you've got" to get the part.  

    Mark also went to say the BBC "took a risk" by using two young lead actors, but it was "a dream come true"

    Details were then given about India Chipcase's last known movements hours before her death. She had been with friends, had become very drunk "and could barely stand up", say the prosecution.

    She became separated from her friends and she ended up outside NB's night club. A doorman tried to help her into a taxi the court were told.

    She left the taxi and "while in this fairly troubled state the defendant arrived outside NB's dressed in a duffel coat and carrying a rucksack: It was not long before he discovered India and went up to her, people thought he knew her". 

    They heard him say to her: "Not to worry", he'd get her home safe. "He didn't," said prosecutor Mr Donnellan.

    Mr Tenniswood denies rape and murder, and the trial continues.

    The jurors at Birmingham Crown Court were told 20-year-old India Chipchase's death "was no dreadful accident, had it been [Edward Tenniswood] would have called an ambulance or carried out CPR".

    When Mr Tenniswood, 52, of Stanley Road, Northampton, was arrested police saw a scratch on his neck and other marks on his body.

    After the death the court was told he made his way to the Ibis hotel in Northampton where he spent many hours before disappearing and returning to the hotel the following evening where he was found by police three hours after the discovery of her body.

    Mr Tenniswood denies rape and murder.

    Prosecuting, Christopher Donnellan QC said: "At 6 Stanley Road [India Chipchase] was raped and throttled not long after arriving. The cause of death was pressure on the neck and that after she died [Edward Tenniswood] set about tidying up...he re-clothed her, covered her in a sheet and left her...he removed her belongings."

    The court was told the defendant was fully aware of what he was doing, he had put on clear plastic vinyl gloves which were later found in a bag of rubbish.

    Her blood on the outside and his partial DNA was also found on the gloves.

    "He alone knows what the motive was...it was very likely sexual. When she resisted he gripped her around the throat and squeezed...she suffered a blunt force trauma to the head and face and appeared to put up a struggle", said Mr Donnellan.

    Mr Tenniswood, 52, of Stanley Road, Northampton, denies rape and murder.

    The trial of a man accused of the rape and murder of India Chipchase in Northampton is under way.

    Opening the case for the prosecution,  Christopher Donnellan QC told the jurors at Birmingham Crown Court that India's body had been discovered at 03:45 on January 31 this year.

    The prosecution say she had been laid out in a mattress in a sheet on the floor of an address in Stanley Road in the town. She was last seen alive between 01:30 and 02:00 the night before after being "accosted, steered or escorted" by the defendant Edward Tenniswood, 52, of Stanley Road, Northampton, outside NB's nightclub.

    He denies rape and murder.

    Last month we brought you news of calls for better maintenance of Northampton's cemeteries, after complaints were made about the one in Dallington.

    Now, the Northampton Chronicle and Echo reports there are further calls, external to get a war heroes' cemetery, this time in Kingsthorpe, tidied up, after claims an elderly man even took to cutting the grass himself with scissors.
