    The University of Northampton has paid tribute to midwifery student Charlotte Hart, who was shot dead by her father in Lincolnshire yesterday.

    Charlotte's mother Claire was also killed near a swimming pool in Spalding. Her father, Lance, then took his own life.

    Mary Huntley, senior lecturer of midwifery at the University of Northampton, said: "Charlotte was a lovely young woman, whose quiet friendly manner served her well with her academic studies at university and during her clinical placement with Kettering General Hospital.

    "Charlotte was well liked and extremely hard working throughout her studies, as well as when she was playing for the University of Northampton Students' Union lacrosse team."

    The High Street is closed in both directions at the Church Street junction.

    It follows a serious crash involving two cars.

    A teenager shot dead by her father near a swimming pool in Spalding, Lincolnshire, was a student at the University of Northampton.

    Charlotte Hart, 19, and her mother Claire, 50, were killed yesterday. Her father Lance, 57, then took his own life.

    Charlotte was studying midwifery at Northampton.

    The trial into the alleged rape and murder of India Chipchase has heard from a man who claims to have seen a couple in the street where her body was found.

    Patrick Francis told Birmingham Crown Court that he was having a cigarette in Stanley Road, Northampton, when he saw an older man and a younger woman cross the road.

    He said: "She seemed as if she was drunk because she was holding onto the railing, and the guy with her was by her side."

    Mr Francis said the man had taken her arm and guided her inside a house along the street.

    Two days later he saw a news appeal for information about Miss Chipchase, 20.

    When police broke down the door of the house on 31 January they found the body of Miss Chipchase, who was on a mattress in the upstairs front bedroom, covered by a sheet.

    Edward Tenniswood, 52, from Stanley Road in Northampton denies raping and murdering Miss Chipchase.

    A trial has been hearing how friends of India Chipchase searched for her when she went missing during a night out.

    The 20-year-old Northampton woman had been with a group of friends at NB's nightclub in Northampton on 29 January. It was in the early hours of Saturday that the group noticed she was gone.

    Harry Moylan told Birmingham Crown Court that he had just bought a round of drinks: "When I turned around, India wasn't there."

    After about 10 to 15 minutes, he and another friend decided to look for her.

    "It's out of character for her to leave without saying anything," he said. "We looked everywhere for her but we couldn't find her."

    Mr Moylan said they thought she'd gone home or met up with other friends.

    Edward Tenniswood, 52, from Stanley Road in Northampton denies the charges of murder and rape. The trial continues.

    India Chipchase, a 20-year-old Northampton woman who was allegedly raped and murdered by a stranger after a night out, was earlier crying about a troubled relationship, a court has heard.

    Birmingham Crown Court was told that Miss Chipchase had a "30-second outburst" about the romance with a man. One of her friends, Alice Lewis, told the court: "She just told me they weren't speaking much any more. She was upset."

    Miss Chipchase showed Ms Lewis marks on both her forearms and was "just crying about everything".

    Friends of a Northampton woman who was allegedly raped and murdered by a stranger after a night out have been telling a court they looked everywhere for her, but assumed she'd gone home after drinking too much.

    The body of 20-year-old India Chipchase was found at a house in Northampton on 31 January.  Edward Tenniswood, 52, of Stanley Road in the St James area of Northampton, denies the charges.

    Birmingham Crown Court has today been told that Miss Chipchase and a group of friends went to NB's nightclub in Northampton on 29 January.

    One of the group, Brandon Allford, recalled how he pulled her leg about her being "steaming" drunk.

    Managers at Kettering General Hospital say improvements are being made to its accident and emergency department.

    It follows a report from inspectors, external, who say some changes are still needed to improve patient care.

    In a statement, Leanne Hackshall, Kettering's director of nursing and quality, said the issues raised by the Care Quality Commission inspectors had been addressed.

    The forecasters say it'll be a hot and humid afternoon with some hazy sunshine. The temperature will get as high as 29C (84F).

    But isolated heavy and thundery showers are possible this afternoon and evening.

    Having secured their place in the quarter-finals of the Twenty20 competition, the Steelbacks, external will now be chasing a home tie in the last eight.

    Last night at Wantage Road, the Steelbacks beat the Birmingham Bears by 74 runs.

    They have two group matches left this month - home and away to Yorkshire. The first is at Headingley on Friday night.

    The Steelbacks have secured a quarter-final berth with two games to go and know that if they win those, they'll be at Wantage Road for the first knockout round.

    Hospital inspectors from the Care Quality Commission have published their latest report, external on Kettering General, highlighting areas within its accident and emergency department which require improvement.

    The key findings affecting the department include:

    • Patients requiring emergency treatment were not always identified in a timely way, leading to delays in care
    • Patient records within the paediatric area of the emergency department were not always stored securely and were accessible to anyone who entered
    • Patients’ privacy and dignity were not always respected whilst being cared for in the corridor of the emergency department

    The inspectors pointed out that staff were caring and considerate towards patients and their families.

    It might not be until September, after the breeding season, that work will restart at Melbourne House in the St James area.  

  15. Eight arrests following Northampton assaultpublished at 10:13 British Summer Time 20 July 2016

    Eight teenagers have been arrested after an assault on a couple in the Blackthorn area of Northampton on Monday night.

    Police said a woman injured in the attack was in a "critical condition" in hospital.

    A man, who was also attacked, received hospital treatment but was discharged yesterday.

    The incident happened in Harefield Road sometime between 22:00 and 23:30 on Monday. The teenagers arrested are all male and live locally.

    The police are appealing for witnesses.

    Flowers were left outside The Collingtree pub and restaurant where Miss Chipcase worked.

    Here are the events leading up to the trial of Edward Tenniswood for the rape and murder of India Chipchase, as heard in court yesterday.

    • Mr Tenniswood, 52, of Stanley Road, Northampton, turned up outside NB's cocktail bar in Northampton in the early hours of 30 January and was overheard by others saying to Miss Chipchase, 20, he'd "get her home safe"
    • Mr Tenniswood checked into the Ibis Hotel in Mare Fare at about 21:30 GMT on 30 January  
    • Miss Chipchase's body was discovered inside his home at about 15:30 on 31 January
    • He was arrested three hours later
    • Mr Tenniswood appeared before magistrates on 2 February charged with her murder. His trial started yesterday
    • He denies the charges
