    The leader of the Labour opposition on Northampton Borough Council says it was "clear that many mistakes were made" in the £10m loan to the Cobblers.

    Danielle Stone said PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) report, external shows: "that from start to finish the whole process had flaws and serious mistakes".

    The loan was made in 2013, by the Conservative administration, then led by David Mackintosh, now MP for Northampton South.

    Ms Stone said that "in most walks of life, if a serious mistake like this was made there would serious consequences" but didn't expect anything to happen at the current administration.

    "Time pressures" from politicians, shown in email correspondence, reduced the ability of officials to challenge a decision to lend more than £10m to Northampton Town Football Club, according to today's report from PricewaterhouseCoopers.

    The say credit checks indicated Northampton Town was "high risk" but no "specific" risk assessment was carried out.

    The damning report from the authority's internal auditors says the council kept lending more cash even though "physical progress" of redevelopment "did not align" with the amount already loaned.

    In other words, just looking at the lack of progress on the East Stand, it should have been clear that it didn't match with the money being drawn down.

    Northampton Borough Council has apologised "unreservedly" for a series of failings with the £10m loan to Northampton Town Football Club, most of which has not been paid back.

    Actress Lindsay Lohan will not be turning on the Christmas lights in Kettering this evening, Philip Hollobone the MP for Kettering said, describing it as a "big disappointment".

    The star was invited to perform the task by Mr Hollobone, after an "offensive" tweet on EU referendum night in which she asked, "sorry, but Kettering where are you?"

    Conservative Mr Hollobone said the council had "gone the extra mile" to secure the Hollywood star for tonight's switch on, but as of today "she isn't coming".

    Northampton Saints number eight Louis Picamoles will play for France at the weekend as the team face World Champions New Zealand in Paris.

    Yesterday we told you it had been a year since Kelvin Thomas agreed a deal with David Cardoza to take over the Northampton Town Football Club.

    To mark a year since Mr Thomas took over, the Northampton Chronicle & Echo, external have sat down with the chairman to look back at the last 12 months.

    In the interview, external the former Oxford chairman says there "definitely times when [the deal] wasn’t going to happen".

    He also speaks about the club's previous manager Chris Wilder, the East Stand and what the motivation for running the Cobblers is.

  8. Cricket: Duckett look set to replaced by Buttler for Englandpublished at 08:37 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2016

    England's third Test against India begins in Mohali on Saturday and the tourists plan to bring big-hitting Lancashire wicketkeeper Jos Buttler back into the team as a specialist batsman for his first Test in 13 months.

    He is set to replace Northamptonshire's Ben Duckett, who has made only 18 runs in three innings.

    England's batting coach Mark Ramprakash said that Buttler has been preparing for a Test return by having a 10-over match simulation against squad bowlers Jake Ball and Gareth Batty.

    "We've tried to set little scenarios for him," said Ramprakash, a former England player.

    Northampton flanker Calum Clark has been banned for three weeks after pleading guilty to striking Worcester's Donncha O'Callaghan with his elbow

    The first-half incident had gone unpunished during Friday's Premiership match, but he was later cited.

    He will miss league matches against Newcastle and Leicester, and the Champions Cup game against Leinster.

    Ben Nutley is set to take his place in the Saints side for the Premiership game against Newcastle tomorrow.

    Today we'll get the fullest account yet of the build-up to a £10.25m loan of public money to Northampton Town Football Club.

    Northampton Borough Council made the loan in 2013, but much of the money went missing.

    The authority's internal auditor PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has been looking at whether the council's policies were up to the job and if the correct procedures and safeguards were followed.

    PwC's report will be published later today.

    Saints director of rugby Jim Mallinder says he doesn't think Calum Clark intended to hurt Donncha O'Callaghan with his elbow in Friday's 18-17 victory over Worcester.

    The Saints flanker faces a disciplinary panel this evening and possible a ban.

    In 2012, Clark was suspended for 32 weeks following an incident which left Leicester's Rob Hawkins with a broken elbow.

    He was also sent off for head-butting in the 2008 Junior World Cup final while playing for England Under-20s.

  18. On this day: Kelvin Thomas agreed deal to takeover Northampton Townpublished at 16:20

    It was on this day one year ago that Northampton Town chairman Kelvin Thomas agreed a deal with then chairman David Cardoza to buy his controlling stake in the club.

    It would then take a couple of days to complete the formalities, including paying off a tax bill, and negotiations with the borough council, which prevented the club going into administration.

    Since then the club has secured the League Two championship, seen seats put into the previously empty East Stand and welcomed Manchester United to Sixfields in the EFL Cup.

    I think it's fair to say it's a year that the Cobblers' fans won't forget in a hurry.

  19. Autumn Statement will 'boost business' says Chamber of Commercepublished at 15:45

    The Autumn Statement is "responsible and solid" and will "reassure businesses", the Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce said.

    Chief executive Paul Griffiths said the announcement of investment in infrastructure from the chancellor "will boost business confidence at a critical moment".

    However, Mr Griffiths added: "We would have liked to see more action on the high up-front taxes and costs of doing business, particularly business rates."

  20. Supermarket worker 'happy' to pose for naked calendar after breast cancer surgerypublished at 15:07 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2016

    One of the women at the supermarket in Kettering who released a naked charity calendar says she was "happy to help" after suffering.

    Michele Boddington, is one of 10 women at the Tesco store who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, including one member of staff who died earlier this year.

    The calendar launched today will raise money for local and national charities.
