You may remember last month we reported on the state of the 13th Century Queen Eleanor Cross in Northampton.
Heritage campaigners said it has been seriously neglected in recent years and called on officials to carry out urgent repairs.
When we contacted the county and borough councils, each disputed ownership of the monument.
Well, now an application has been submitted to get it maintained... by Northampton Borough Council.
The borough council understands its application will be passed to the Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) in the near future.
While the application is considered, the authority is considering quotes from a range of potential contractors with a view to appointing once consent is received.
Tim Hadland, responsible for regeneration, enterprise and planning on the council, said: "We are keen to ensure that this work is carried out in the right way and as soon as practicable.
"The Eleanor Cross is a very important part of Northampton's heritage and it is essential that we get this work right, which is why anything we do will be governed by a tight brief from Historic England and assessed thoroughly by expert conservators before being done."

One of Northampton Saints' great players has died at the age of 89.
Frank Sykes played for Saints in their great side of the 1950s. He made 235 appearances for them, scoring 152 tries.
He was also capped four times by England and went to South Africa with the Lions in 1955 before working as a schoolteacher in Northampton at the Grammar School - now known as Northampton School for Boys.
One of his pupils there was Bob Taylor, who went on to become a Saints, England and Lions player in his own right.
"If you gave Frank the ball his sole determination was to score," Taylor explained.
"He was one of his own and certainly outstanding. He would have survived in today's game, no doubt about it."
On their Twitter account, Northampton Saints said they were "saddened", adding: "Our thoughts with Frank's family and friends at this time".

A Northamptonshire charity has raised concerns that nearly half of people who have a rare neurological condition were originally misdiagnosed.
Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, or PSP, can leave sufferers unable to walk, talk, eat or balance and is often confused with Parkinson's disease. It currently doesn't have a cure.
The PSP Association, external, based in Towcester, is launching an awareness campaign, as people with the condition can have a lifespan after diagnosis of seven to 10 years if they receive the correct treatment.
"It's very frustrating that no-one knew what was the matter with me," said Dianne Whitney, from Northampton, who was told she had Parkinson's in 2008 before her condition was rediagnosed as PSP two years later.
Describing the condition, she said: "I can't do anything on my own, I need my husband there with me. I can't move out of the chair really."
About 6,000 people have the condition, but the charity says the number could be more than 10,000.
"It's an intolerable situation," said Prof James Rowe from Cambridge University.
"If you know what to look for it really isn't very difficult [to diagnose]. With that diagnosis you have access to help."

The Royal London Cup comes to an end for Northants today with their final group match against Nottinghamshire at Wantage Road.
With just one win from their seven games so far, the county have no chance of reaching the knock-out stage of the 50-over competition. Notts will reach the quarter-finals if they win.
Yesterday the Steelbacks announced that wicketkeeper and batsman David Murphy will miss around three months to recover from a lower back injury.
Murphy joins team-mates Josh Cobb (knee), Alex Wakely and Rob Newton (both groin), and Rob Keogh (finger) on the treatment table.
"Those four are our batters who started this campaign," said a frustrated head coach David Ripley.
"It means opportunities for some of the younger guys; we hope that they'll grab it."
Play gets under way at 14:00 and there will be live commentary available here.
Police in Northampton are hoping to trace a motorcyclist who tried to ride into a shop during an attempted robbery.
They said a man riding a silver BMW motorbike mounted the pavement at the Co-op on Main Road, Duston, and attempted to force his way in at about 10:20 on Thursday, 27 April.
A staff member was in the doorway which prevented the offender from entering. He threatened the worker and demanded money, but this was refused and he rode off.
The offender was white, aged under 30, very slim and he wore a blue tracksuit top, blue jeans and trainers.
Police would like to speak to anyone who may recognise the man.

Police in Northampton are on the hunt for a man who got out of a car and threatened another man with a yellow handled axe, before robbing him of his mobile phone.
It happened about 13:30 on Saturday on Goldings Road.
