As part of the BBC's Shakespeare on Tour series BBC Radio Nottingham today looked at when black actor Ira Aldridge performed in Nottingham.
Mr Aldridge born in New York moved to Europe to be taken seriously as an actor and was famous for his portrayal of Othello.

Forest striker Britt Assombalonga marked his return from injury by scoring and playing for 45 minutes for the Under-21s side against Hull City.
The 23 year old has been out with a knee injury since February 2015.

The congestion is continuing on Mansfield Road and Shakespeare Street this afternoon because of road closures around the Victoria Centre.
A large crane has appeared outside the centre which is replacing old cooling towers on the roof as part of the redevelopment.
General manager, Nigel Wheatley, said: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused and we will endeavour to complete the works as quickly as possible.”

Middleton Boulevard is busy this afternoon at Crown Island in the roadworks area.
A woman was airlifted to hospital this morning after a crash on the A57 in East Markham, external. She is not thought to have life-threatening injuries. Two others were also treated for minor injuries.

In Nottingham three libraries have closed since 2010, with 68 jobs being cut and one more is also proposed for closure this year.
Nottingham City Council’s portfolio holder for leisure and culture, councillor Dave Trimble, said they have "protected the library service as best they can" and are investing money into several libraries over the coming months.

The crane which has been blamed for causing traffic problems in the city this morning is lifting equipment onto the roof of Nottingham's Victoria Centre.
The city council said the work had been planned for the Easter period when roads "are generally quieter"..
A spokesman said they had made some adjustments to the traffic lights and added an extra lane on Shakespeare Street to avoid the same traffic issues.
Might still be best to avoid the area if you can until Thursday.

On Thursday a former social worker was jailed for the rape and abuse of children in homes more than 30 years ago.
Speaking to BBC Radio Nottingham this morning, Nottinghamshire's police and crime commissioner Paddy Tipping said he was "pleased" for the victims and felt it was a big step for bringing them justice.

Almost 8,000 jobs in libraries have been cut across the UK in the last six years.
In the East Midlands 36% of jobs in libraries have been lost which is the biggest percentage drop.
There were 1,905 paid posts in 2010 compared with 1,213 now.
The BBC has compiled the data, external from 207 authorities responsible for running libraries through the Freedom of Information Act.

South Yorkshire Police say Darrel Bryce who has gone on the run from a prison in Doncaster has connections with Nottingham and Worksop.
The force said members of the public should not approach either men, external if seen but contact police immediately.

A Nottinghamshire man has gone on the run after absconding from prison.
Darrel Bryce (left) was serving a life sentence at HMP Hatfield in South Yorkshire for robbery and possession of a firearm.
Bryce absconded with Jeremiah St Phorose (right) yesterday morning.

Nottinghamshire Police says in total 29 children were arrested for suspected firearms offences last year, which is an increase from previous years.
The arrests included three children under the age of 11 in 2015, two in 2014 and two in 2013, and has seen 15 children aged 17 and under being charged in the last three years.
The county's Police and Crime Commissioner, Paddy Tipping told BBC Radio Nottingham that despite these figures, crime in our region was falling faster than anywhere else.
He said there was still a lot of work for the force to do.

Mansfield Town manager Adam Murray admits his side now faces a very tough task to reach the play-off places after the Stags had to settle for a 2-2 draw with runaway leaders Northampton.
Matt Green had scored a brace within 16 minutes to give Mansfield the lead but Jamie McGuire’s red card changed the game and allowed the visitors to get back in it.
The result leaves Mansfield eight points off the play-off places.
