    Nottingham-based Dan Evans is back in action at the Dubai Tennis Championships later when he takes on world number 12 Gael Monfils.

    Evans, 26, who trains at the Nottingham Tennis Centre, beat Dustin Brown on Tuesday to book his place in the last 16.

    A win for Evans over Monfils would see him play either Roberto Bautista Agut or Fernando Verdasco in the quarter finals.

    Some stabbing victims are paying veterinarians to treat their injuries, according to youth workers in Nottingham.

    The victims are reluctant to go to hospital because they do not want to the police to know they were stabbed.

    Nottingham boxing coach Marcellus Baz (pictured), who also runs knife crime workshops, said he knows of several victims locally who have been "stitched up" by vets.

    The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons said it could not confirm if it had complaints about vets treating stab wounds due to confidentiality.

  4. Three companies set to bid for East Midlands rail franchisepublished at 09:43 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2017

    Three companies have qualified for the chance to bid to run the East Midlands rail franchise, the Department for Transport has announced.

    Arriva Rail East Midlands, First Trenitalia East Midlands Rail and Stagecoach East Midlands Trains are the three companies looking to run the services from November 2018. 

    Each company will soon be invited to bid and they will then be assessed for what passenger benefits they offer and whether they represent value for money.

    The funeral of MRI "pioneer" Sir Peter Mansfield will take place at St. John's Church in Beeston later (12:00).

    The 83-year-old spent his whole career at the university and has had a building named after him on the campus.

    Oliver Pepys, the auctioneer who will be putting William Peniston's medals under the hammer, has said that the soldier's back story makes this lot interesting.

    "It is a very exciting group," Mr Pepys said. 

    "He is one of only a few recipients to receive four gallantry awards during the Great War and what is nice is three of them were awarded over three weeks."

    The medals of a WWI soldier who was decorated for gallantry three times in three weeks - probably without firing a shot - are set to be auctioned.

    Nottinghamshire miner William Peniston joined the Kings Royal Rifle Corps and became a stretcher bearer.

    The "remarkable" collection is set to go under  the hammer in London, external  with a guide price of £8,000-£10,000.
