    The figures showed that in some months the fire service were called up to 10 or 11 times to Nottingham Prison.

    Prisons Minister, Sam Gyimah, said: "The definition of fire incidents is not reserved for deliberate acts of arson; it also covers a wide range of circumstances including accidental fires.

    "Although the fire service routinely attend fire incidents in prisons, the majority are relatively minor in their nature."

    New figures have revealed HMP Nottingham had one of the highest numbers of fires in jails in the country last year. 

    There were 78 blazes recorded at the Perry Road site which included fires started deliberately as well as accidental fires.

    The figures were revealed in a Parliamentary answer to a question by Tim Farron, the Liberal Democrat leader.

    Nottingham was third in the list, with Thameside Prison in south-east London recording 101 fires last year and Birmingham recording 82.

    A 38-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving , external following the crash on the A1 near Newark yesterday.

    Police said the driver of one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene following the six-vehicle accident.

    One other man was airlifted to hospital with serious, but not life threatening injuries, and four other people were treated for minor injuries.

    The crash happened at 07:55 on the northbound carriageway, causing long delays throughout the day and saw a section of it closed until this morning.

    The widow of a man who died in the Tunisia terror attack in June 2015 says tour operators should do more to warn travellers of the risks before they book a holiday.

    John Stollery, a former Nottinghamshire social worker, was shot dead in the attack while on holiday with his wife Cheryl and their son.

    Last month a coroner ruled the victims were "unlawfully killed" by a gunman and rejected a finding of neglect against the tour firms and the hotel.

    But Cheryl Stollery from Walesby told BBC Radio Nottingham there should be better communication between the foreign office and travel agents and "kite marks" for hotels which guarantee minimum safety standards.

    She said: "I needed more in depth information about what was happening and why we would've been at risk....If that had been reported to me we wouldn't have put ourselves at risk."

    Tour operator TUI said it has already taken steps to raise awareness of the Travel Aware campaign.

    BBC News online has more on plans to build a helipad at the QMC. 

    It will be funded by a £2.5m donation from the Nottingham Hospitals Charity and a £700,000 investment from the Nottinghamshire University Hospitals NHS Trust.

  10. Thousands of fake goods with a retail value of £1m seized at airport published at 14:21 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2017

    Thousands of fake items have been seized during a crack down on counterfeit goods by Border Force officers at East Midlands Airport.

    Over 8,000 items were confiscated in three days which included make up, fake trainers, electrical items and designer handbags.

    Border Force officers said if genuine, the goods would have an estimated retail value of over £1m.

    A week of BBC stories has explored the different ways people are trying to make the air cleaner.

    The  SoICanBreathe  project asked for people's stories about the steps they're taking and suggestions to make a difference to air pollution.

    Ema Gleaden, 24, from Nottingham suggested we should create more rooftop gardens with restaurants creating their own herb gardens and using compost bins.

    She said she wanted to do a part time course in horticulture so she could create green spaces in residential and industrial areas. 

    Tim Pryce at the Carbon Trust said: "There are many reasons to encourage tree planting and rooftop gardens, they help clean the air, support urban wildlife and create better living spaces."

    Notts County chairman Alan Hardy told fans at a Q&A last night that reducing the club’s £4m debt is among his biggest challenges.

    There has been a long campaign to get a helipad at the QMC.

    At the moment air ambulance currently lands on a helipad at Highfields Park a mile away before transferring patients by road to the QMC's Major Trauma Unit. 

    Back in 2014 the hospital  launched its helipad charity appeal in 2014 , external and has since raised £2.5m to go towards the landing pad.

    Then in 2015 a plan to put the helipad on top of a multi-storey car park was approved but those plans fell through when a study found the proposals were not suitable for the location.

    The hospital trust said the latest plans would see the helipad "on stilts" above an existing ground-level car park to the south side of the hospital.
