Nottingham City Council said they brought Mr Sattar's case themselves because they wanted to understand whether they could leave the signs as they were or would have to change them.

A spokesman said: "The adjudicator agreed with us that it was in the public interest to seek clarification and so we had agreed with them that whatever the outcome, neither party would seek costs against the other.

“We now need to look at the details of the judgement and decide how to proceed. However, the judgement will not alter those cases where people have accepted a fine on Shakespeare Street.”

So in short, if you have already paid your fine for driving at that end of Shakespeare Street you cannot now appeal.

The street, outside Nottingham Trent University, was pedestrianised in 2015 and is only used by student and school buses, or tram replacement buses.

She said: "The adjudicator was entitled to emphasise the importance of consistency in signage."

That was needed "to avoid confusion among road users who may be travelling at speed, in unfamiliar places, perhaps when visibility is poor".

A taxi driver has had his fine for driving along a pedestrian zone in Shakespeare Street, Nottingham overturned by the High Court because of inadequate signage.

The High Court agreed with the Traffic Penalty Tribunal (TPT) Adjudicator that Nottingham City Council could not fine motorists for "being in a bus lane" when the street was a pedestrian zone.

Mohammed Sattar's car was caught by a bus lane camera in Shakespeare Street in November 2015 but he appealed the fine and saw it overturned yesterday.

Nottingham City Council said they used Mr Sattar's case as a "test case" to seek clarification on whether or not their signs complied with statutory requirements.
