    The University of Leicester has been handed its largest ever donation from an individual.  

    It has been given £2.7m by philanthropist Jimmy Mayer to go towards transformative kidney research.

    Mr Mayer, a Columbian businessman, decided to make the donation after his son was diagnosed with a form of kidney failure five years ago. 

    He said: "When my son was diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy in 2012 I, as any father, started to research to better understand this condition…I came across the great work of the fabulous team at Leicester.  

    "I hopped on a train for a visit and have ever since been their number one fan."

    Hundreds of people queued to catch a glimpse of the archaeological dig at the old factory site near Great Central Street and Highcross Street in Leicester this weekend.

    Mosaic floors were revealed during an excavation at the site last year and experts said they were the largest and finest-quality mosaics found in the city in more than 150 years. 

    The display has been so popular that public viewing has been extended from today until Friday, between 12:00 and 14:00.

    Police have reopened a road following the discovery of a body there earlier this morning., external

    Nottinghamshire Police said it found the body at around 03:45 this morning and closed the A610 at Giltbrook, near Nottingham. 

    The man's death is not being treated as suspicious, the force added. 

    The road was closed for around three hours.

    It was a disappointing day for Derbyshire's One Day Cup campaign, falling short as they faced the Yorkshire Vikings at Headingley.

    The Vikings set the bar high scoring 349-7 - a tough task for Derbyshire but after a century by Wayne Madsen the Falcons set their sights on the target.

    They eventually fell just short at 334-8.  Daryn Schmit scored an impressive 77 not out in Derbyshire's reply.

    The deal to sell Nottingham Forest to Olympiakos owner Evangelos Marinakis is "99%" complete, according to Fawaz Al Hasawi.

    Forest owner Al Hasawi has told BBC Radio Nottingham that prospective new owner Marinakis is meeting with the English Football League this week.

    A previous takeover by a United States consortium, led by businessman John Jay Moores, fell through in January.

    The Reds ensured their Championship survival with a 3-0 win over Ipswich Town on the final day of the season.

    This weekend marked ten years since a horse riding accident left Claire Lomas paralysed by a horse riding accident.   

    Lomas, who was 27 at the time, also suffered a fractured neck and a punctured lung, but she has not let that stop her. 

    She has taken part in the London Marathon and last year completed the Great North Run, raising thousands of pounds for charity in the process. 

    Lomas, from Melton Mowbray, was also made an MBE in the New Year Honours.
