A tarantula the size of a hand has been found abandoned in a plastic box on a Leicester street.

It's been identified as a Brazilian salmon pink bird-eating tarantula - the third largest species of tarantula - and was found by a "shaken" member of the public on Narborough Road.

The arachnid has now been taken on by a specialist exotics keeper.

The animal charity RSPCA is recommending that anyone interested in keeping a tarantula as a pet does their research first.

The member of the public who contacted us was understandably shaken by the size of the spider. Despite the size, the spider was not aggressive at all. We are concerned that someone abandoned a spider in the street like this. It is likely that the spider was an unwanted pet which someone decided to dispose of for whatever reason."

Did you know there were seven "forgotten" cycle lanes in the East Midlands?

The routes are part of hundreds across the UK that were created between 1934 and 1940 by the Ministry of Transport, but many of them fell out of use after World War Two.

Now a historian and cycling enthusiast has used Google Maps to locate these cycle ways as part of a campaign to reinstate them.

Here's the cycle ways he found:

    • Raynesway, Derby
    • Melton Road, Leicester
    • Glen Road, Leicester
    • King Edward Avenue, Leicester
    • Arnold Road, Nottingham
    • Woodside Road, Nottingham
    • Wollaton Vale, Nottingham

The number of cases of teenage girls being admitted to hospital for self-harming in Leicestershire has more than doubled in the past three years.

Figures obtained by the BBC show there were 190 cases between April last year and March this year.

This is a sharp increase from the 87 cases during the same period in 2014-15.

    Ambulance

It's not just girls that are self-harming - there are some cases of boys being admitted but it's much fewer.

During the same three year period it's risen from 16 to 25 cases.

These are only the cases where the person has been hospitalised - it doesn't cover the figures of those who self-harm and never seek help.
