    Firefighters spent three hours tackling a blaze in a car yard in Newhall last night.

    Crews from Swadlincote, Burton and Ashby were called just after 20:00.

    Thick plumes of black smoke could be seen for miles around. 

    Luckily, no-one was injured and crews left the yard at about 23:00, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

    UKIP has confirmed they will not be putting candidates forward for seats in Mid Derbyshire, Derbyshire Dales, Erewash, Amber Valley, South Derbyshire and High Peak. 

    Derby North is the only Derbyshire seat they will contest. Their candidate is Bill Piper.

    In Ashfield, Ray Young will stand for the party, while there will be no UKIP candidate for Bassetlaw.

    Other Nottinghamshire UKIP candidates we are now aware of include Fran Loi, who will stand in Broxtowe, Lee Waters - who will compete for the Gedling seat - Stephen Crosby, who will stand in Nottingham North, Robert Hall-Palmer, who will stand in Nottingham East, and David Hollis - who will fight for the Nottingham South seat.

    In Newark, Xandra Arundel will stand for the party, while Matthew Faithfull and Stuart Bestwick will stand in Rushcliffe and Sherwood respectively.

    A Palestinian man has been charged with the murder of a British student who was stabbed to death in Jerusalem. 

    Hannah Bladon, 20, was attacked as she was travelling on a light rail train near the Old City, in Israel, on Good Friday. 

    Jamil Tamimi, 57, faces a charge of intentional murder over the attack on the University of Birmingham student. 

    The Derby County fan had been on an exchange programme at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

    Ms Bladon's family said she had been taking part in an archaeological dig that morning and described her as a "talented musician" and "enthusiastic rugby player". 

    The train was packed at the time of the attack as Christians marked Good Friday and Jews celebrated Passover. 

    A pregnant woman and a 50-year-old man were also injured when the tram came to a sudden stop in the aftermath of the attack.

    Three teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of arson following a fire at a derelict college building in Clifton earlier this week.

    Police said the former Fairham Community College in Farnborough Road was significantly damaged by fire at about 19:50 on Tuesday.

    At its height, about 40 firefighters tackled the blaze and a big plume of black smoke could be seen in the area.

    It was the second fire at the site in a week.

    Three boys, aged 15, 14, and 13, were arrested yesterday and have been released on bail.

    Two porky pets have become finalists for an animal charity's annual pet slimming competition.

    Barnaby the cat and Lola the rabbit - both from Derby - have made the final of the PDSA's Pet Fit Club competition.

    The charity nominated both Lola - who weighs 7.1kg - and Barnaby, who is 8kg, in the hope they would shed the pounds. They're up against six other animals nationwide.

    Both pets have until October to lose weight and start living a healthy lifestyle. Lola herself has already dropped a few pounds.

  13. Drayton Manor staff 'shaken' by schoolgirl Evha Jannath's deathpublished at 17:02 British Summer Time 11 May 2017

    In a post on its Facebook page, bosses at Drayton Manor Theme Park said the "tragedy" of Evha's death had "shaken the whole Drayton Manor family from the board, through to staff and visitors".

    The 11-year-old fell into the water while on the Splash Canyon rapids attraction.

    The theme park said staff's thoughts "continue to be with the family and all those who have been affected by Tuesday’s incident".

    Two teenagers have gone missing from their home in New Basford, police have said.

    Amaree Ross, 15, and Romy Johnson, 13, left their Nottingham home at about 14:45 yesterday but haven't been seen since.

    Police said , externalAmaree is around 5ft tall, and normally wears her hair in a bun on top of her head.

    Romy is around 4ft 10ins tall with short black hair.

    Drayton Manor theme park says it will stay closed on Friday "to allow the Health and Safety Executive to complete their work" following the death of 11-year-old Leicester schoolgirl Evha Jannath who fell into water there on Tuesday.

    The attraction said its "thoughts continue to be with the family and all those who have been affected by Tuesday’s incident".
