The Richard III Society has branded the decision as a "monumental mistake" which would be "humiliating" to the king.

But Professor Michael Hicks, who has previously cast doubt on whether it is actually Richard III's remains that were found in Leicester,, external thinks the issue has been blown out of proportion.

He said: "Of course the story has been dramatised, but the essential message - that Richard usurped the throne and had the princes killed - is not really deniable.

"If plays are to be staged in cathedrals, and this one has been shown there before, I don't see the objection. It is a great play that will continue to be performed.

"It is a storm in a teacup really."

  17. 'No fracking tests in Sherwood Forest'published at 11:56 British Summer Time 11 May 2017

    Dave Wade
    BBC Local Live

On the subject of fracking in Nottinghamshire, the county council has received a formal notification from energy firm Ineos that it's undertaking six months of 3D seismic surveys starting next month.

And it's NOT now planning to survey within the Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve, as was previously suggested.

    anti-frackers

In January the RSPB, which takes over management of the reserve next year, spoke out against Ineos's plans to survey the forest and an anti-fracking protest was held.

The 96 sq mile (250 sq km) area where the surveying is taking place extends into Derbyshire and Rotherham, but excludes important ecological areas, including Thoresby Lake, Welbeck Lake and Sookholme Brook in Warsop.

A 50-metre boundary zone will be in place to safeguard scheduled monuments, including important archaeological sites and historic buildings, the council has said.

Planning permission is not required for the surveys, which are to determine where shale gas might be located.

They could lead to fracking - but that would require planning permission.

The council has approved a total of two exploratory shale gas well sites between Barnby Moor and Blyth and in Misson but has received no planning applications for fracking.

Surveying will take place between 07:00 and 19:00, seven days a week, at least 50 metres from residential properties.

Plans to check for the potential for shale gas extraction in the local area were revealed earlier this year.

Paul Frost, from the local Green Party branch, said: "It is a benefit to our campaign against fracking to have an MP that shares our views on the dangers and potential threat posed by this industry.”

Also standing in the Mansfield seat are Ben Bradley for the Conservatives, UKIP's Sid Pepper and Anita Prabhaker for the Liberal Democrats.
