    A minute's silence will be held across the country as a mark of respect for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire.

    The London building was gutted after a fire ripped through the block on 14 June.

    Police have confirmed 79 people are either dead or missing, presumed dead, following the fire.

    Nottinghamshire County Council, Leicester City Council and the University of Derby are among the many organisations in the East Midlands that will be holding a minute's silence at 11:00 BST.

    The Muslim community in Nottingham is being urged to remain calm after this morning's "terrorist attack" near a mosque in London.

    Dr Musharraf Hussain, chief Imam at the Karimia Institute in Nottingham, said: "In some ways this is a tactic that extremists or terrorists take in order to create disunity to create conflict.

    "The solution, the reply, is to remain calm as everyone is saying and to actually regard this as a terrorist attack that is done for the purpose of creating conflict or hatred."

    Mr Hussain is also supporting the idea of extra security around mosques in the coming days and has asked for worshippers to be vigilant.

    In a statement,, external the Chief Constable of Nottinghamshire Police, Craig Guildford, said the force "would provide visible reassurance across Nottinghamshire".

    Over the weekend, about 120,000 community events were held across the country in memory of MP Jo Cox.

    They were held one year after her murder in Birstall, West Yorkshire.

    One of the events was a street party in Normanton, organised by Zareen Ahmed.

    She told the BBC there should be more events like this that bring the community together - especially now when "there is a lot of division".

    There were several other events in the East Midlands, including one at the Eyres Monsell Community Centre in Leicester and at the Haywood Road Community Centre in Nottingham.

    Jo Cox's husband Brendan said his wife would have been "incredibly humbled" by the events taking place in her name.

    Police have confirmed they are investigating an incident of criminal damage at the West Bridgford Conservative Club.

    The word "scum" was sprayed on to the side of the building last weekend, which is near Rushcliffe MP Ken Clarke's constituency office.

    "We were called at around 10.45am on Saturday 10 June to a report of criminal damage at West Bridgford Conservative Club in Rectory Road," a spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said.

    "Officers are investigating and are appealing to anyone with any information that could help to contact them."

    A man has died after being found unconscious outside a shop on Evington Road in Leicester this morning.

    Police have said, external they are making enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death and have cordoned off the area for a forensic examination.

    The man's death is currently being treated as "unexplained".

    Oxford United's head coach Michael Appleton has told the club's players he is leaving.

    It's thought a deal to make him Leicester City's assistant manager could be confirmed in the next 24 hours.

    Michael Appleton held talks with Oxford's owner Darryl Eales on Friday but could not be persuaded to turn down the offer from Leicester.

    He then called players over the weekend to inform them of his decision.

    Large chunks of masonry have fallen of a building and on to a pavement in Nottingham.

    Part of Alfreton Road has been cordoned off after police and structural engineers were called to the former Rose and Crown pub, which is now privately owned and used as student accommodation.

    Barriers have been placed around the area.

    Asif Mehdvi, who owns the Istanbul Turkish Restaurant next door, says he reported safety concerns six months ago.

    He said: "I can still see some problems and I am glad the police have closed the pavement now until the local authority resolves this."

    Police have closed off a footbridge near Chesterfield railway station after a woman reported being assaulted early this morning.

    The bridge is on Corporation Street and goes over the A61. Police have said it will be closed for "some time".

    Bottles were thrown and roads had to be closed after rival cricket fans clashed in Leicester after Pakistan beat India in the Champions Trophy.

    Large groups gathered in Belgrave Road following the match at The Oval in London on Sunday afternoon.

    The Chief Constable of Leicestershire Police, Simon Cole, has tweeted about six police officers that were reportedly injured while trying to control the disorder.

  13. Police to provide 'visible reassurance' following 'terror attack'published at 08:13 British Summer Time 19 June 2017

    The Chief Constable of Leicestershire Police has said officers will be providing "very visible reassurance" in the county following what's being treated as a "terrorist incident" in London.

    A man has died and 10 people have been injured after a van was driven into a crowd of worshippers near a mosque in Finsbury Park.

    Many of the victims are believed to have just left evening prayers at the Muslim Welfare House after breaking the Ramadan fast.

    In a statement, external, Chief Constable Simon Cole said: "The reverberations of this incident will reach many of our communities here in Leicester, and my officers will be working hard today to provide very visible reassurance and support to those who will understandably be particularly worried by the events overnight.

    "We will be speaking to community leaders to see what help we can provide to alleviate any anxieties and concerns this shocking incident will have caused."
