Swarms of flies and a "vile" smell are plaguing homes in Kirkby-in-Ashfield which residents blame on a nearby tip.

People living in Low Moor Road said the Veolia Waste Transfer Facility attracts the flies.

Trefor Walters, who is the founder of the Kirkby Action Group, collected this in 24 hours.

He said: "We keep the windows closed, which is pretty bad anyway... as soon as you open the window the smell crawls through the window and attacks you and the flies come soon after - it is a constant battle."

Veolia said it has "enhanced odour control measures" after meetings with the group, Nottinghamshire County Council and the Environment Agency.

The county council also said Veolia has agreed to introduce a number of operational changes to help with the problem.
