  3. Was Big Ben named after Nottinghamshire boxer?published at 10:41 British Summer Time 21 August 2017

    BBC Local Live

You'll have no doubt heard that Big Ben will fall silent at 12:00 today and the bongs won't sound regularly again until 2021.

It's because of a major refurbishment of the Elizabeth tower and the clock.

What you might not know is it's possible connection to a Hucknall boxer.

    big ben

The exact origin of the name Big Ben is the subject of some debate.

There are claims it's connected to pugilist Big Ben Caunt, from the Nottinghamshire town, who later ran a pub near the Palace of Westminster.

Ben's great-granddaughter, Linda West, said: "He was renowned here and in America as 'Big Ben'.

"I believe that, because it was in the vernacular - a large item would be termed 'a Big Ben' - I would think a bell of that size would have been called 'a Big Ben'."

Ben was about 6ft 2ins and would fight in matches that would last as many as 90 rounds.

Work is continuing to repair damage done in the main field, which is still described as "90% mud" nearly a month after it was held.

The festival, near Matlock, was cancelled part way through due to mud safety fears.

The field is owned by farmer Arnie Flowers, who's preparing to negotiate next year's festival with the organisers.

Despite saying seeing his land churned up was "soul destroying", he said: "We would have them back but there would have to be contingency plans."

Festival goers have been offered partial refunds but some haven't received theirs.

In response, a Y Not spokeswoman said: "Everyone who bought a ticket and attended the festival has received a 50% refund because of the final day cancellation.

"We've heard from a number of people who haven't received their refund yet and we're getting this fixed."

But for some fans, the game was marred by reports of homophobic chanting by a small number of Leicester City fans.

    Quote Message

In the last 20 or so minutes the chanting started towards the Brighton fans and then after that it got a bit more nasty with a few isolated shouts, which were a bit more malicious. It made me very shaken, I felt a bit unsafe and very unwelcome in a place I've been going to since I was eight years old.

Police confirmed two Leicester fans were arrested on suspicion of homophobic abuse.

Graham Smith is the chair of Foxes Pride and said the club is being "proactive" when it comes to stopping abusive LGBT language, but believes they could do more.

He has suggested the club warn fans before the match that they could be thrown out and arrested if they use homophobic language.

A Leicester City spokesman said: "While disappointed that such abuse took place during Saturday's match, we are satisfied that our stewards reacted swiftly and appropriately, which led to the responsible minority being ejected from the stadium and reported to the police."

This is what one of Nottingham's busiest car parks looks like this morning after part of it collapsed over the weekend.

Vehicles were left dangling over the edge of the NCP car park in Mount Street after part of a wall came away in the early hours of Saturday.

    car park

This morning, you can see the metal fencing and barriers blocking the entrance to the car park.

Unbelievably, there are still cars inside on some of the lower floors.

You can see where the concrete has fallen away from the first floor level and three levels above it.

There's still a bit of debris on the ramp up to the entrance and floor below.

NCP staff are on site guarding the entrance.

The company says structural engineers are on site working to make the car park safe in order for it to reopen, but there's no indication of when that will be.
