A couple from Leicestershire had quite the shock when they discovered a huge beehive in their house - after honey was seen "oozing" through the ceiling in one of the bathrooms.

The couple - who wish to remain anonymous - noticed a patch on the ceiling, and on closer inspection, saw the substance was sticky and coming through the light fixtures.

After further investigation, they noticed "a lot of bees" and called in a bees expert, who made a hole in the ceiling and discovered the huge hive with hundreds of bees.

The bees were then removed and the ceiling was repaired.

Now it's a beautiful piece of art, which depicts Liz and Neil Welch's family and important things to their lives.

It stands in their front garden in Radcliffe-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire.

The pole was created by a chainsaw artist, based on drawings by Liz, 57, who has stage four breast cancer.

    BBC Local Live

A man has been jailed for assaulting three ambulance staff members.

East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) said Nicolas Frost, from Ellistown, assaulted two ambulance technicians and a paramedic on 8 July as they attempted to take him to hospital.

Police had called for the ambulance after Frost fell over outside a nightclub and injured his head.

Ray Woolley was driving the emergency vehicle.

He said: “He tried to get my colleague on the floor and when he was unsuccessful, he put him into a headlock and kept punching him in the head.”

Police were called and they were able to restrain Frost while a second ambulance had to be sent to check over the crew who had been injured. They also took Frost to hospital with a police escort.

EMAS said Frost pleaded guilty to three counts of assault by beating and was sentenced to 26 weeks in prison.

This highly endangered baby mole cricket has been found in the car park of a plant nursery in Cossington.

The insect is now going on a journey - it's being posted to the Natural History Museum in London.

There it will be allowed to grow into an adult.

Alan Dayman, from Derry's Nursery, believes the mole cricket travelled into Leicestershire on some of his foreign stock - possibly from Italy or Holland.

It's been 10 years since 20-year-old Sophie Lancaster was kicked to death by teenage boys - just because she was a goth.

Earlier this month - on the anniversary of her death - her family joined 15,000 revellers at the Bloodstock heavy metal festival in Walton-on-Trent, Derbyshire, where a stage has been named after her.

BBC News has been looking at whether attitudes have changed a decade since her death.

The parents of 16-year-old Hannah Foxton took her out of school because of how bad her experiences were.

"I just wouldn't leave the flat for months... any time I went outside, I had panic attacks. It was brutal," she said.

It was only when she moved to Nottingham that she felt she could finally be who she wanted to be.

"I needed to be happy and get that confidence back," she said.

"Yes, I still get the odd stare and shout of 'Satan', but I also get compliments."

  9. Watch: Calls for learner drivers to have lessons on rural roadspublished at 09:13 British Summer Time 24 August 2017

    Amy Woodfield
    BBC Local Live

The road safety charity Brake is calling for learner drivers to have compulsory lessons on rural roads.

In 2015, 120 young drivers died on UK roads, with 80% of crashes taking place in rural locations.

"High speeds, sharp bends, narrow lanes, risky overtaking and the presence of vulnerable road users like cyclists, make rural roads the most dangerous by far," said Jason Wakeford from Brake.

This CCTV footage, from Ratcliffe-on-the-Wreake four years ago, is an example of what can happen on county roads.

Alison Eames was out riding her horse Dylan when they were struck by a car.

The impact broke Dylan's spine and he had to be put down.

She is now backing the proposals from Brake and thinks more training for drivers on rural roads would save others from the same experience.

Ms Eames thinks a lot of drivers just don't understand how to react horses on the road and said: "If people have got knowledge, then they make different decisions."

  10. Balloon flown at height of HS2 viaductpublished at 08:51 British Summer Time 24 August 2017

We've been in Long Eaton this morning, measuring 17m - the height of the proposed viaduct - with a train-shaped helium balloon.

It's five metres taller than the Tesco Extra supermarket in the town centre - and the equivalent of about four double-decker buses.

  11. HS2 viaducts 'could be local attractions'published at 08:49 British Summer Time 24 August 2017

    Dave Wade
    BBC Local Live

Could a 17m tall viaduct carrying HS2 through Long Eaton be a local attraction?

That's what Erewash MP Maggie Throup has said.

She thinks it's the best option for people living and working there.

Nearly 800 people responded to a consultation published last month, with the viaduct option receiving slightly more support than a low-level line, which critics say would have cut the town in half.

    Maggie Throup

But Brett Poland from Stop HS2 Erewash said: "There was a third option to tunnel under the whole lot which is happening in the Chilterns and other parts of HS1 but in Long Eaton we're just in second class."

The Conservative MP said: "We went back to the table and came up with this high viaduct option and the embankment option so the town won't be cut in half so I think already we've made sure there are changes that will benefit Long Eaton."

Meanwhile, in the Nottinghamshire village of Trowell, another three-mile, 17m high viaduct is planned to carry the high speed rail line from the other side of the planned station in Toton.

Campaigners there said they're still hoping to change the minds of HS2 bosses.

  12. Mental health care ward closes over staff shortagespublished at 08:41 British Summer Time 24 August 2017

    Amy Woodfield
    BBC Local Live

A mental health care ward in Bakewell has closed its doors for the final time.

The Riverside Ward at Newholme Hospital has closed because of low patient admission levels and staff shortages.

Patients have now been transferred to other mental health care wards such as Walton Hospital in Chesterfield and the Cavendish Hospital in Buxton.

Recruitment challenges to specific clinical roles are being felt across the whole of the NHS. Our older people's mental health service has recently struggled to maintain staffing levels across all four of our older people's mental health wards and we are expecting the challenge to become more severe imminently as staff move on. For this reason, to maintain patient care and safe staffing levels, we have made the decision to close Riverside Ward at Newholme Hospital."
