Both of the "pepper pot" towers at the former Derbyshire Royal Infirmary have been saved from demolition.
Derby's planning committee has agreed that hundreds of homes can be built around them but they did have to persuade the developers to keep both towers.
The council has only given outline permission so far meaning it's approved the principle of building homes, offices and shops.
It's still got to tick off what the houses should look like, how many car parking spaces there should be - those sort of things.

Nearly 400 fines have been handed out to drivers in the first week of a new camera being installed outside Leicester Railway Station. - close to where a cyclist was killed.
Before 5 September, the bus stop outside the station was patrolled by enforcement officers.
Now a 24-hour camera with automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) covers the corner of Station Street to the corner of Conduit Street.
Only buses and Hackney cabs can pull over in the bus stop - something hundreds of drivers have ignored so far. They now face fines of £70 (or £35 if paid within 21 days).
The installation of the camera follows a fatal crash in July 2016 where cyclist Sam Boulton was knocked into the path of a moving van.
The weather's taken a turn for the worse, but before the clouds and the cold there were some lovely sunrises across the East Midlands this morning.

Three decades ago it became a shopping arcade, then it was an oriental restaurant, but on Sunday it'll re-open once again as a church.
The Dicoese of Derby is resurrecting St Werburgh's on Friargate to try to attract more young people.
Rev Phil Mann, lead minister at St Werburgh's, said a lot of the modern furnishings from its restaurant days have been ripped out, but old features will remain.
Quote MessageThere's a real excitement and a buzz that this is being brought back to its intended purpose as a church, so we're really excited to see what will happen.

A family from Thorpe Astley have chosen an unusual way of getting though a difficult time in their life.
When Andy Whitfield was made redundant twice in two years and his son was diagnosed with autism it pushed him into depression.
Then Andy and his family set up a hedgehog sanctuary.
It all started with just two disabled hedgehogs that the Andy and his wife Alison got to help them deal with a slug issue in their garden - now they have a garage full of the spiky animals needing help.
The couple has used social media to raise money so they can keep caring for hedgehogs. However the sanctuary has also had a positive affect on them.
Andy said: "These guys have helped us through quite a lot."

Tram services are now back in service after a crash on the lines at the end of Wilford Bridge.
The tram has been moved, allowing services to continue, but a silver Audi is still at the side of the road with a huge dent in the back of the vehicle.
The impact was severe enough to knock the wheel back into the main body of the car, while a pedestrian crossing has also been knocked to one side.
