  9. 'Pillownauts' experiment paves the way to Mars explorationpublished at 11:17 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2018

    Hayley Compton
    Reporter, BBC Radio Nottingham

While Elon Musk has been making headlines by sending the Falcon Heavy rocket into orbit, Nottingham's been contributing to space exploration by letting people sleep.

Ten people were picked for a scientific study by the University of Nottingham to simply lie in bed for three days to simulate the effects of weightlessness - as if they were in space.

    Pillownaughts being tested

The test is running in parallel with a 60-day bed rest study by the European Space Agency in Toulouse and will see participants, known as "Pillownaughts", stay on a hospital bed with their feet above their head. Bodily fluids then mimic the way they would during space travel.

Dr Natalie Shur, who is leading the experiment, said: "We are looking into how quickly detrimental changes occur such as muscle wasting and the onset of pre-diabetes. There are other models to test this but this is the most tried and tested."

It is all part of work to make the human body capable of handling the stress it would endure during a trip to Mars.
