    A Hindu temple in Leicester has found a new way to reduce the amount of plastic it throws away.

    The community centre at Jalaram Prarthana Mandal on Narborough Road feeds up to 1,000 people every week.

    Until now, they've served food on single-use plastic plates. Now they have invested in harder wearing plastic trays, plates and cutlery that can all be washed and reused.

    Sunil Budheo said he was inspired by Sir David Attenborough's TV series, Blue Planet ll.

    He said: "When I saw the damage it was doing it stirred up an emotion in me. That inspired me to come up with an idea. At the end of the day it's a planet for all of us and I wanted to do something."

    A 61-year-old man has been taken to hospital with "non life-threatening" injuries after being hit by a car in Leicester last night.

    The pedestrian was struck on St Peter’s Road at about 18:30 while he was walking over a zebra crossing.

    Leicestershire Police said, external officers are carrying out house-to-house enquiries and looking at CCTV footage.

    The force is also appealing for anyone who was in the area and saw what happened to get in touch with them.

    The 11:48 London King's Cross to Hull, due 14:16, will no longer call at Retford.

    This is due to damage to the overhead electric wires.

    Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service is advising people to avoid the East Street area in Derby following reports of a possible gas leak.

    The Ministry of Justice has confirmed there's been another death at Nottingham prison.

    A Prison Service spokesperson said 37-year-old Darren Capewell died in custody on Wednesday.

    It follows a spate of deaths last year when five inmates died in the space of one month.

    There will now be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.

    Earlier this year the BBC reported claims workers at HMP Nottingham were stopping stop two suicide attempts every week.

    For punters who fancy picking up some Pinter with their pints or some Marlow with their merlot, a Leicestershire pub might have the answer.

    For Croxton Kerrial's village local - the Geese and Fountain - is also operating as a library during daytime hours.

    Owners Nick Holden and Kate Ahrens are self-confessed "book lovers" and have 1,400 tomes from their own collection around the pub for people to browse and borrow.

    Nick said: "It's quite nice to have to contrast between being a busy pub in the evening, with lots of noise and talking going on, then during the day we're a library and get to hush everybody."

    Work is due to start on a 40-bed care home and library on a derelict factory site in Derbyshire.

    The development at the former Thorntons factory, which will start in April, will cost £9.8m and is expected to be completed by summer 2019, external.

    Jean Wharmby, the county council's cabinet member for adult care, said the new "state-of-the-art" building would be a great addition to the town.

    The owner of a nursery that had its licence suspended by Ofsted has refuted claims that "children may be at risk of harm".

    Sarah Waller, who owns the Darcy Bunnie Creative Arts Nursery, Hilton, said the situation is now "in the hands of lawyers".

    She added: "Parents have been amazing over this and are as upset as we are. We hope to be back in the Bunny House very soon."

    Work is about to begin on creating a new "super crossing" at Vaughan Way in Leicester, allowing cyclists and pedestrians to access the developing Waterside area from the city centre.

    The plans form part of a £50m redevelopment project by the city council, external that will also see the construction of two new hotels, office space and "public space" in the area of Great Central Street. This road will no longer be open to traffic.

    Another part of the project is to refurbish the old Great Central Station which has been empty for almost 40 years.
