    The Friendly Bench is the first of its kind anywhere in the UK, and hopes to provide a location where people can get together and enjoy plants and wildlife, particularly for an ageing population in the village and those who have mobility problems.

    The new initiative includes a mini, kerbside community garden specially designed to tackle loneliness and social isolation by connecting people to each other, to places and with nature.

    A father and son have pleaded guilty to their involvement in an attack on two members of an animal welfare charity as they monitored the Belvoir Hunt.

    George and Thomas Grant, both from Belvoir, pleaded guilty at Leicester Crown Court to one count of grevious bodily harm, one count of actual bodily harm, theft of a video camera and damaging an SD card today.

    It happened at Stathern near Melton Mowbray in March 2016.

    The men, aged 57 and 25, will be sentenced on 14 June.

    Police have released this CCTV of a missing Derbyshire man in a fresh appeal to find the 68-year-old.

    Trevor Needham, from Codnor, hasn't been seen since Wednesday 4 April. This footage shows him walking through Darley Abbey Mills on that afternoon.

    A woman who's daughter was killed in an explosion in Leicester, is raising money for the charity her daughter worked for.

    Leah Reek, 18, was one of five people who died following an explosion at a shop and flat on Hinckley Road in February.

    She had worked as a volunteer at the Loros hospice in the city, and was hoping to become a full time nurse.

    "She had the biggest heart, she was so kind, she always looked out for everybody," Joanne Reek told East Midlands Today.

    "When she saw a weak person, she always helped them."

    A seven-year-old boy picked up this nasty looking injury to his head while playing on a roundabout at Dovecote Lane Park in Beeston.

    His mum Kay Rowntree said a metal bar on the equipment had been broken and hit him in the head.

    She said: "You don't expect something like that to happen at a children's play area. I was appalled to be honest."

    Mrs Rowntree said after posting about it on Facebook she heard about another accident on the same roundabout two weeks previously which was apparently reported to the council - but not fixed.

    She added: "We're now two weeks on and my son has been quite seriously injured by it so I'm angry really. I'm angry because it should never have happened."

    Broxtowe Borough Council says it's investigating what happened and its officers have been in touch with the family.

    A woman from Leicestershire says her life was saved by using an NHS bowel cancer self-screening kit. Joyce Crookes from Newbold Verdon is keen to tell others to use them and not bin them as many are thrown away as junk mail.

    The kit is posted out to those over 60, every two years until the age of 74 and requires taking stool samples. The NHS says one life is saved for every 200 screened.

    There's been reports of flash flooding in parts of Nottinghamshire this morning.

    Heavy rain overnight has caused a stream to burst in Lambley and flooded a road into Lowdham.

    For a short time it forced buses to be divert around Lambley and Woodborough.

    It still looks pretty bleak out there and the Environment Agency has six flood alerts, external across Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire.

    Two people arrested in connection with the death of a Leicester jeweller have been released while investigations continue.

    The 22-year-old man and 19-year-old woman were held on Monday on suspicion of assisting an offender.

    Four men have already been charged over Ramniklal Jogiya's death.

    The 74-year-old did not return home after leaving his Belgrave Road shop on 24 January. His body was found the next morning in Gaulby Lane, Stoughton.

    Football fans have been warned to expect a "significant police presence" at this weekend's local derby between Chesterfield and Mansfield.

    Ch Supt Jim Allen, from Derbyshire Police, said:, external "Our goal is to keep disruption to a minimum for both fans and local residents.

    "Fans are advised to expect a significant police presence, including mounted police, and measures are being taken to limit opportunities for disorder.

    "This may include a staggered exit from the stadium at the end of the game, where Mansfield supporters are advised to remain seated until the home fans have left the stadium.

    The match between relegation-threatened Chesterfield and promotion-chasing Mansfield Town is a 13:00 kick-off on Saturday.

    A couple from Leicester are to get married moments before running the London marathon.

    Mel Elliott and James Parker from Knighton will read their vows just 10 minutes walk away from the start line.

    They're ditching suits and dresses for running gear for the service but Mel still plans to wear a veil.

    They hope their wedding will be an inspiration to other couples as well as raise money for the charity, Get Kids Going.

    Budding paleontologist Ollie Brockman-Joyce found a tooth belonging to an extinct baby hyena during a visit to Creswell Crags in Nottinghamshire.

    The nine-year-old said he had been exploring the Robin Hood cave when he uncovered the find.

    He said: "This means everything to me."

    Notts Outlaws captain Dan Christian is to lead a special indigenous anniversary cricket tour to the UK.

    It will commemorate 150 years since an Aboriginal cricket team became the first sporting team from Australia to tour internationally.

    Christian's 13-man squad will face matches against the likes of Surrey, Sussex, Derbyshire and the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) on the two-week tour.

    A council is bidding to tackle congestion and improve safety outside a school, by piloting traffic restrictions.

    Parents will now not be allowed to wait on the streets around Millfield Academy, in Braunstone, between 08:00-09:00 and 14:00-16:00 on weekdays.

    The roads affected by the restrictions are Hat Road, Freeboard Road, Woodcote Road, Lubbesthorpe Road and Pits Avenue.

    Leicestershire County Council said it hoped the six month trial would encourage families to walk and cycle to school.

    Derby City Council said its roads network requires £15.5m to properly maintain surfaces damaged by weather and congestion, but it can only afford to spend £3m.

    It has urged the government to dish out more money to organisations which oversee highways.

    "This is by far the council's biggest property asset which is worth over £1.2bn," a spokeswoman said.

    "Like all property assets, the condition of our roads and footways deteriorates over time, and we have calculated the value is currently reducing by £4.9m per year."

    In 2015, the government launched a £6bn fund to improve local roads outside London over seven years, with £296m of that going to local authorities this year to fix potholes.

    Police are appealing for information after a man died in a crash on the A50 last night.

    The collision, between junctions three and four of the eastbound carriageway, happened at around 21:00 last night.

    The man, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene, Derbyshire Police added.
