In the House of Commons where MPs are debating changes to the EU bill, Ruschliffe MP and Father of the House, Ken Clarke, has said he "has never known an issue of this importance being taken in this way".
The Tory MP - who has represented Rushcliffe since 1970 - said there was "hours and hours of debate" on the Maastricht Treaty.
He said "the timetable motion we just passed" has allowed "just three hours for this whole debate" before the first set of votes.
"Hundreds of members will find it almost impossible to get in" adding that he voted against the programme motion.
He added he hopes he doesn't "live to see another referendum in my life".
The Commons have "scarcely looked at" everything that the process of leaving the EU will affect, he said.
The idea that a yes/no vote decided "each and every aspect" of leaving the EU is "intellectually lazy", he added.
Mr Clarke and Broxtowe MP Anna Soubry were the only two Conservative rebels. They voted against the government on the programme motion.
