The university used a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund and donations from several charities to purchase the collection from a private seller, who has asked for the final amount paid to remain undisclosed.

Craig Davidson of the university’s campaign and alumni relations office, who led the fundraising appeal to acquire the collection, said: “The natural home for these items is Nottingham. It is where Lawrence spent his formative years, and it is his geographical heartland which these materials evoke.

"Lawrence also had strong connections to our institution, and so we felt very strongly that the collection should remain at its rightful home at the University of Nottingham.”

  5. Planning inspector approves village housing developmentpublished at 09:04 British Summer Time 12 June 2018

Plans to build 42 homes in a Leicestershire village will go ahead after the planning inspectorate overturned Harborough District Council's decision to refuse the development.

The homes will be built on land west of Lutterworth Road in Gilmorton - but changes will have to be made to the original application and developers will have to stick to a strict set of conditions.

Councillor Julian Kent, chairman of Gilmorton Parish Council, said: "Our overall feelings are of disappointment and frustration. In 2011 there were 400 houses in the village, there will be 600 by the end of the next couple of years, that's a growth of 50 per cent.

"Will they just keep going until we join up with Lutterworth?"

The application was originally refused because of the new homes being close to the village's Grade II listed church, The Church of All Saints but the planning inspector found the benefits outweighed the negatives.

The developer, Sheiling Properties Ltd, cannot start work until the council approves details of the appearance, landscaping, layout, and scale of the properties.

Soldiers from across the East Midlands are spending several months working as United Nations peace-keepers in Cyprus.

The Royal Lancers are patrolling villages and city streets that have been abandoned for more than 40 years to mediate between the armies of Greece and Turkey in the island's buffer zone.

    Cyprus patrol

Cyprus split after a 1974 coup aimed at uniting the island with Greece sparked a Turkish invasion.

Since then, UN peacekeepers have patrolled the empty streets and manned the distant watchtowers that separate the Greek Cypriot south from the Turkish Cypriot north in the former British colony.

Capt Charlie Henson said: "There's still a very real danger of escalation and we try to nip all that in the bud at the lowest level when there are disagreements between the two sides."

"She was snatched off the street in Poland and sent to a camp," she added.

    BBC News Online

The family of a boy who died from meningitis say a hospital has put them through "four years of absolute hell" due to confusion about why he died.

Chesterfield Royal Hospital gave 14-year-old Callum Hubbard's parents compensation after admitting they failed to identify he had meningitis.

However, an inquest has now contradicted this by concluding the hospital may not have been at fault after all.

The hospital apologised and said it had "learned some important lessons".
