About 5,000 school pupils from across the East Midlands are to take part in a national walk today aimed at raising awareness about the number of children hurt in road accidents.
Latest Department for Transport figures showed 1,199 children were killed or injured on the region's roads in 2016 - the equivalent of 23 every week.
Nottinghamshire had the highest number of road casualties for that period (212) while Rutland had the fewest (seven).
The national walk has been organised by road safety charity Brake to draw attention to the issue and will involve about 100,000 children from across the UK.
The charity wants to see more footpaths, cycle paths, safe places to cross and measures to slow down traffic and reduce harmful emissions.
