The chief executive of Rolls-Royce is due to meet with investors today to detail how the restructuring of the company will work.

  10. Analysis: Why Rolls-Royce cuts may not be a disasterpublished at 08:25 British Summer Time 15 June 2018

    Chris Doidge
    BBC Radio Derby, political reporter

While 4,600 job losses at Rolls-Royce is awful, particularly for the individuals involved, here's my silver lining - some reasons it may not be a disaster for Derby:

    rolls-royceImage source, PA
    1. This is an internal restructuring. It's not directly going to affect the local supply chain like a drop in production would
    2. Rolls-Royce staff commute from across the Midlands. Not all of the 2,000+ Derby redundancies will live here
    3. The company's recruiting at the same time as restructuring. Chief executive, Warren East, said the net loss will be much less than that headline figure
    4. The company is thriving and has committed to Derby. The new engine test bed was the big uncertainty. It's being built and it effectively ties the company to Sinfin for decades to come
