Nottingham City Council has said it is prepared to use anti-social behaviour laws to shut the county's most used phone box after claims its popularity was down to drug users.

The authority has asked BT to remove the phone box outside the Bridgeway Centre in the Meadows area of the city which is used about 3,000 times a year.

Chris Brummitt from the nearby Bridges Community Trust said she had never seen the phone box used for anything other than arranging drug deals.

Councillor Toby Neil told the BBC: "We want to make sure everybody is in agreement, or the majority of people are in agreement, and we'll take action on it because it's the sort of anti-social behaviour that we don't really want in communities.

"There are closure orders that we can apply to all sorts of things if they're having a negative impact."

BT said it has proposed the removal of this specific payphone but it might be replaced with a digital unit that can be used to make calls as well as access the internet.

A mother says county council delays have left her son without any transport to take him to his new special school in Leicestershire.

Emma Hardy's son Joshua, who has learning difficulties, started at Birchwood School in Melton Mowbray - 12 miles from their home in Sileby - last week.

She told BBC Radio Leicester she had been trying to sort out his transport arrangements with the council through the summer but no plan had yet been put in place.

As a result, she and her husband have had to change their working hours and re-arrange nursery drop-off times for her other son.

She said: "You can't offer a child a place at a specialist school and then not sort the transport out.

"I'm having to finish early from work. Dad's having to take an hour out from his work to come and pick Joshua up. It's four trips a day.

"They [the council] said there's a waiting list and sometimes you can be waiting up to five weeks."

Leicestershire County Council said: "We're aware of Mrs Hardy's concerns and we're working hard to put transport arrangements in place as soon as possible having now completed eligibility and risk assessments relating to her son.

"In this particular case, transport arrangements will likely be in place within the next two weeks."
