Looking at the figures I can’t see any pressing need to cut costs. The staff costs to income ratio the leadership team cite as being too high has actually fallen in recent years. The University also ‘cut the cloth’ two years ago, citing the same need to reduce staff costs.

Dr Ken Weir, University of Leicester, School of Business lecturer in accountancy

The University of Leicester said it is working "closely and constructively" with UCU to mitigate the risk of compulsory redundancies.

It claims all alternatives are being "actively explored".

Jurors at Leicester Crown Court heard claims 56-year-old Gardner raised at least £24,000 from various events but only £4,000 made its way to any charity.

The lorry driver put on three truck-pull events in 2013, 2014 and 2015 in Medbourne and also in Market Harborough - fundraisers which were attended by thousands of people, including Fusilier Rigby's widow Rebecca and his son.

    Nick Smith
    BBC News Online

There are claims a council has "betrayed" residents after it objected to a public hearing about plans for development on a Hinckley beauty spot.

For many years residents living near the Big Pit - the former site of a brick works - behind Ashby Road, have fought attempts to build there.

The latest bid by Orbit housing to build 60 properties on the site was turned down by the Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council’s planning committee earlier this year but the housing company is appealing the decision.

Opposition councillors have criticised the council for not insisting on a public hearing by the planning inspectorate over the matter.

Liberal Democrat county councillor Michael Mullaney said the councli's stance was a, "total betrayal of all the local residents concerned by this development".

But a council spokeswoman said a public inquiry would be a, "costly burden for local taxpayers".
