    An inquest has opened into the death of a Derbyshire teenager from an undiagnosed heart infection.

    Daniel Elton, 18, from Castle Gresley, died in November 2015 while medics were investigating a variety of symptoms, including stomach pains, anaemia and a sprained ankle.

    A post-mortem examination ruled his cause of death was sub-acute endocarditis - a rare and potentially fatal heart infection, external.

    Derby Coroners Court heard the condition had not been picked up by GPs at his local practice or medics at Queen's Hospital in Burton, where he had been sent for tests.

    Dr Robin Thorne, who had seen Mr Elton at the surgery in South Derbyshire and referred him to a gastroenterologist, told the inquest it was a "baffling case" and said the "pieces of the jigsaw" had not really led to endocarditis.

    He said since the teenager's death he had woken in the night, wondering if he could have done more or spotted signs of the deadly condition and run it past colleagues.

    Representatives from Queen's Hospital are also due to give evidence at the inquest, which is scheduled to run for several days.

    A man has been charged with burglary following a break-in over the weekend.

    The 35-year-old is accused of carrying out a burglary in Alexandra Street, Eastwood, just after 18:00 on Saturday.

    He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates' Court today.

    A secondary school in Derbyshire has suspended production of its yearbook after students were invited to nominate their peers in categories such as "best bum" and "flirtiest".

    Newspaper reports over the weekend, external said some parents of pupils at Highfields School in Matlock had complained about the "inappropriate" nature of the poll.

    In a statement issued via the school's Twitter account, the school said production of the book had been put on hold.

    The chairwoman of Disability Nottinghamshire says she is "disgusted" by a decision to introduce parking charges for blue badge holders at Nottingham's hospitals.

    Head of the charity, Lorna Carter, said: "We are disgusted by the decision...

    "We are not in favour of charging anyone for parking at hospitals and people who use blue badges are already squeezed. It's just another nail in the coffin for them."

    Mick Callendine, who was visiting the hospital to see his seriously ill granddaughter today, said: "Getting here by tram is easy but there are certain times where you can’t and you’ve got to be here pretty quick.

    "It’s absolute bedlam trying to get here. I do feel sorry for the blue badge holders."

    The charges are set to be introduced in the new year at Queen's Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital.

    Three men have been arrested, external after a 19-year-old woman was hit by a car in Leicester yesterday morning.

    The teenager was hit by a Volkswagen Golf near the junction of Church Gate and Gravel Street at about 06:00 and was treated in hospital for non life-threatening injuries.

    The trio - two 19-year-olds and a 20-year old - were arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and dangerous driving and have been released as investigations continue.

    A victim of sexual assault has waived her anonymity to praise the Leicester charity that helped her.

    Elizabeth Benge was 20 years old when it happened, and afterwards she began struggling with her mental health.

    She said: I didn't want to do anything. I spent a lot of months inside, just found myself standing in places panicking."

    Police directed her to Jasmine House - a service that "changed her life". She said that after a few counselling sessions she learned how to stop blaming herself for what happened.

    Jasmine House helps about 450 women annually - a number which it says is increasing each year.

    But the charity says funding has recently fallen by 80% and last year it was on the verge of closing.

    Elizabeth's story will feature on Inside Out East Midlands at 19:30.

    Blue badge holders will be charged for parking at Nottingham's hospitals, starting in the new year.

    Director of Estates and Facilities, Andrew Chatten, said:“We have engaged with our patient groups to hear their views on these changes and patients are members of our car parking group.

    "We will be installing additional pay and display machines at relevant heights for blue badge holders."

    This comes with new parking charges at the hospital being introduced from 5 November, along the free parking time being extended from 15 minutes to 30 minutes.

    Blue badge holders will be charged for parking from 7 January.

    A historic timepiece fetched £200,000 when it went up for sale on Friday.

    The piece, made by famous clockmaker Thomas Tompion in about 1690, came from the estate of a man linked to the mining industry in Belper.

    It went under the hammer at Bishton Hall in Staffordshire.

    Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons Auctioneers, said: "It is a particularly fine example of Tompion’s work – work which has stood the test of time."

    The Post Office has confirmed plans to close its main branch in Nottingham.

    It will be merged into a WHSmith store, as happened in both Beeston and Mansfield.

    Post Office Network and Sales Director Roger Gale said: “WHSmith and Post Office have worked together successfully for more than a decade and our collaboration helps to secure our services on high streets for years to come."

    The moved has been criticised by both the Communications Workers Union and Nottingham South MP Lilian Greenwood.

    Documentary makers have been trying to find out whether there is any truth to speculation that Star Wars action figures were buried on land close to the Palitoy Factory in Coalville.

    Spoonjar is investigating the rumour, which dates from 1985 when the factory closed.

    Matt Holt, a cameraman and editor, said the idea all started in a pub: "I was chatting to a friend of mine and he said 'why don't you tell the story of the Palitoy toys being buried'.

    "I'd never heard this story so I started researching around and sure enough over the years people have spoke of this myth, this legend of the factory closing down and all these figures just being thrown away."

    The owner of Leicester Vintage Toys said he believes the rumours of a "toy burial ground" to be true.

    Joe Hand said: "We've spoken to guys that used to back the lorries in, we've spoken to people that used to work there that were witnesses at the time. It is true and we want to find it."

    The documentary producer, Wayne Kelly, said: "Stranger things have happened. We found a dead king under a car park, why not an emperor in a landfill?"

    A woman has been airlifted to hospital with a "serious head injury" after a crash near Ambergate.

    Police said the crash, involving two cars, happened on the A610 in Buckland Hollow just after 15:00 yesterday.

    The woman was removed from a car and taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. Police are appealing for anyone with information or dashcam footage to get in touch.
