An inquest has opened into the death of a Derbyshire teenager from an undiagnosed heart infection.
Daniel Elton, 18, from Castle Gresley, died in November 2015 while medics were investigating a variety of symptoms, including stomach pains, anaemia and a sprained ankle.
A post-mortem examination ruled his cause of death was sub-acute endocarditis - a rare and potentially fatal heart infection, external.
Derby Coroners Court heard the condition had not been picked up by GPs at his local practice or medics at Queen's Hospital in Burton, where he had been sent for tests.
Dr Robin Thorne, who had seen Mr Elton at the surgery in South Derbyshire and referred him to a gastroenterologist, told the inquest it was a "baffling case" and said the "pieces of the jigsaw" had not really led to endocarditis.
He said since the teenager's death he had woken in the night, wondering if he could have done more or spotted signs of the deadly condition and run it past colleagues.
Representatives from Queen's Hospital are also due to give evidence at the inquest, which is scheduled to run for several days.
