Ecclesbourne School's plans to build an extension to its sixth form block have been rejected.
The school, in Wirksworth Road, Duffield, had hoped to build the extension to free up more study, teaching, and cafe space - along with five extra parking spaces.
It stated that existing space was "inadequate and overcrowded" due to rising pupil numbers which are set to increase from 1,420 to 1,625.
However, Amber Valley Borough Council voted last night to refuse the application, stating that the plan would see an unacceptable reduction in recreational space at the school and did not take into account car ownership levels.
The school has been approached for comment on the decision.

Eight neglected dogs have been found dumped "covered in faeces" in Redmile.
The RSPCA said it was alerted to the abandoned dogs yesterday morning. It described the four Newfoundland dogs, two cockapoos and two Lhasa-apsos as being in "such a state".
RSPCA inspector Kate Burris said it was as if the dogs had "never seen the light of day".
She said: “They are skinny and all of the dogs’ fur is incredibly matted and covered in faeces.
"It is possible, due to the breed of the dogs, that they have been used for breeding and then dumped when they were no longer useful."
It's thought the abandoned dogs could be linked to others found 80 miles away in Syderstone, Norfolk.
Quote MessageThe RSPCA does not often see dogs of these breeds so it seems coincidental that this has happened relatively close to where seven Newfoundlands were found in a similar state on Monday. We don’t know if the incidents are linked but it is certainly plausible."
Kate Burris, RSPCA
The dogs have been taken to the RSPCA in Radcliffe on Trent to be examined by vets and treated.
