Many of the business owners have come together at the market cafe.

Tony owns a fruit and veg outlet here and told me he felt sick this morning. He and his son have run the family business for 12 years and last night he watched it burn to the ground.

Liam Fanning, a delivery driver for Bed City, told me what he found as he arrived at work: "There's just nothing there. Just ashes. From a big building down to ashes."

    Nick Smith
    BBC News Online

Low water pressure in the area surrounding the cattle market was a challenge during early firefighting efforts yesterday evening.

Incident commander Bryn Coleman said: "One of the initial issues that we had, we had low water pressure in the area so crews were really struggling with water.

"We used a high volume pump, which is sent into the Nottingham canal, that’s delivered a large quantity of water which has aided our firefighting operation and managed to contain it to the buildings that have been affected."
