    A 79-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion, external of arson following a fire in Bestwood yesterday.

    The fire broke out at Carnforth Court in the Capenwray Gardens area at about 13:45. Nobody was injured.

    The oak tree was planted this afternoon in a short ceremony and a minute's silence.

    Police are increasing patrols in Nottingham a week on from a shooting outside a city centre bar.

    Officers will be speaking to people in the area around Fletcher Gate where a man fired shots toward Das Kino, hitting a 24-year-old woman.

    She is not thought to have been the intended target, police said. The woman was taken to hospital but later released.

    Assistant Chief Constable Kate Meynell said: "People will notice an increased presence in the city centre this weekend, following on from increased patrols throughout the week, and we will be working hard to ensure people can enjoy their nights out and carry on their business as usual."

    A 20-year-old man was arrested and released on police bail in connection with the shooting, the force added.

    The RSPCA has shared a video showing the moment a miniature deer was released back into the wild after being rescued from a church in Nottingham city centre.

    Inspectors from the animal charity had to pull the muntjac - Britain's smallest deer species - from wire netting at St Nicholas Church in Maid Marian Way yesterday morning.

    It was then placed in a carrier and transported back to its normal wooded habitat.

    Andy Brown - lead singer of Liverpool band Lawson - has been announced as the headline act for Derby's Christmas lights switch-on event.

    His band had five top ten hits between 2012 and 2013 but none since.

    The lights are due to be switched on at 18:00 on Saturday 17 November.

    Nottinghamshire's fire service has given us an update, external on the fire at a garage in Stapleford earlier this afternoon.

    It said the blaze in Pasture Road was out by 15:15 and one person was treated for smoke inhalation.

    All fire crews have now left the scene.

    A mother was told she was lucky to avoid jail after a 13-year-old boy died following a visit to her drug-ridden home.

    Jennie Parker, 37, admitted allowing cannabis to be smoked by teenagers at her house in Sloan Drive, Bramcote where Joshua Clarke was a caller.

    Nottingham Crown Court was told he had taken heroin before he arrived at her house on 26 February 2017 and then took cannabis and drank alcohol.

    Shortly before midnight, he became ill and later suffered a cardiac arrest. He died the next day, the court heard.

    Parker pleaded guilty to permitting cannabis to be used in her home and received a one-year prison term, suspended for 18 months.

    The judge, who acknowledged Parker did not cause the boy's death, said the sentence followed national guidelines, which he described as being "surprisingly low."

    He said the boy's death should give cause for reflection by those seeking to liberalise drugs laws and told Parker: "There will be no second chances. Think yourself very lucky indeed."

    Sir David Attenborough is to narrate a documentary series for streaming service Netflix about "the beauty and fragility of our natural world".

    Our Planet is being produced in collaboration with Silverback Films, whose director Alastair Fothergill made Planet Earth and The Blue Planet for the BBC.

    Speaking at a World Wildlife Fund (WWF) event on Thursday, Sir David said the eight-part series would "take viewers on a spectacular journey of discovery".

    The 92-year-old broadcaster, from Leicester, said he was "delighted to help bring this important story to millions of people worldwide".

    He also fronts another new series, Dynasties, due to start on BBC One on Sunday.

    Owner of Notts County Alan Hardy has been banned from driving after travelling at 77mph in a 40 zone.

    At Nottingham Magistrates' Court, the 54-year-old described himself as "the busiest man in the world" and claimed a driving ban would cause exceptional hardship on himself and his family.

    Peter Quinn, prosecuting, said there were clearly marked 40mph signs along the A52 Clifton Boulevard where Hardy was caught speeding on 5 March this year.

    Hardy claimed it was because he drives an electric BMW which makes no noise at whatever speed he is travelling.

    “It’s not like I leave a trail of destruction behind me..."

    “This was a temporary lack of concentration and perhaps I need to change my car.

    District judge Leo Pyle banned Hardy for three months, fined him £2,430 and ordered him to pay £170 victim surcharge and £620 costs.
