    It was "pure luck" no-one died after a car came off a trailer on the A50 in Derbyshire last night, police said.

    The driver of a passing lorry swerved to avoid the vintage Jaguar and ended up in a ditch on the eastbound carriageway between J5 and J4, near Etwall.

    Police said the road was closed for most of the night and the driver towing the vehicle has been reported to court.

    A power failure on the East Coast Mainline caused chaos for passengers going through Nottinghamshire yesterday.

    People were advised not to travel unless absolutely necessary because of the fault between Retford and Newark North Gate which happened at about 17.30.

    It has now been fixed and trains are due to run on Thursday with some alterations - but it is expected to be busy, a spokesman for Network Rail said.
