    Netting which was used to deter pigeons from roosting on a bridge over Nottingham canal has been removed, after it was vandalised, causing the birds to get trapped.

    Several dead pigeons could be seen trapped in the netting on the Lenton Road bridge in the last few weeks.

    A city council spokesman said: “We are pleased to have been able to resolve this issue swiftly.

    "We plan to leave this bridge free of netting like many others along the canal, so there can be no repeat of problems like this through vandalism.”

    Former Derby County boss Gary Rowett has been sacked by Stoke City, just eight months after swapping Pride Park for the Potteries.

    Rowett's future at the club was much-discussed throughout the first half of 2018, with initial speculation linking him with a move to then Premier League Stoke in January.

    He ultimately put pen to paper on a new three-year deal with Derby and guided them to the Championship play-offs.

    The speculation reared its head again in May, with Rowett ultimately leaving for the Britannia Stadium after The Potters were relegated from the Premier League.

    Derby currently sit in sixth place in the Championship, while Stoke occupy 14th.

    A farmer who left dead livestock to rot on farmland for four months has been prosecuted by trading standards.

    Richard Hobday, 55, from Alstonefield near Ashbourne faced a total of 13 charges and pleaded guilty to failing to clear up the decaying sheep, lambs and calves from land at Elton Moor.

    North East Derbyshire and Dales Magistrates' Court heard some of the remains were kept on the land between February and May last year.

    The law states carcasses should be collected immediately to prevent risks to public and animal health.

    At the hearing Hobday, who is also a butcher, also admitted failing to keep proper records to ensure livestock and food was traceable.

    He is on unconditional bail and will next appear in court in February.

    A community farm in Nottingham says it needs to raise £30,000 in two months or it will face closure.

    Stonebridge City Farm in St Ann's has been open for 40 years and supports various education programmes with schools and colleges around Nottingham.

    General manager Peter Armitage said the need for cash is because of a fall in visitor numbers over the winter and funding cuts from various sources.

    He said: "If we don't raise the money we will have to look at ourselves very carefully and ask some very difficult questions.

    "I'm confident the people of Nottingham will help us and we can keep going."

    Wreaths are being laid to remember the 47 people who died in the Kegworth air disaster.

    The Boeing 737 had been carrying 126 people from London Heathrow to Belfast when it was diverted to East Midlands Airport because one of the engines caught fire.

    Barry Bingham was part of a lifeboat crew from Withernsea, Yorkshire who were travelling back from a training exercise when they saw the plane coming down over the M1 in Kegworth.

    He and his colleagues helped with the rescue and described how the plane had "taken everything out" with flames coming up from one of the engines.

    He told BBC Look North: “I noticed the wing door was open and started to climb up.

    "The only person we did see was a chap who was wandering around the motorway in a uniform. It was only later I realised it was a steward out of the aeroplane. He fell out the back.

    “The lifeboat training kicked in. The fact we climbed up that wreckage and there were gallons of aviation fuel like a river, flowing down the embankment, didn’t dawn on us.”

    East Midlands Trains said there will be a replacement bus from East Midlands Parkway to Nottingham instead.

    Severn Trent says customers in Top Valley and Bestwood areas of Nottingham who were without water this morning will now start to see their supplies returning.

    A burst water main in Moor Road, Bestwood Village had caused the problems and engineers have been working to repair the pipe.

    The water company apologised to customers and said pressure would need to build up in the mains before a full supply is restored.

    A 29-year-old man from Worksop is due before Mansfield magistrates today after he was charged with the theft of a digger.

    The JCB was reported "being driven in a suspicious manner" on the A57 in Worksop at about 18:30 on Sunday night.

    Nottinghamshire Police said the vehicle was pursued by officers into South Yorkshire where the driver was arrested.

    The man was charged with theft of a vehicle, failing to stop for police, possession of drugs and various other traffic offences.

    Ex-footballer Paul Gascoigne has repeated his denial of sexually assaulting a woman by kissing her on a train.

    The 51-year-old, of Amy Street, Leicester, was arrested at Durham station in August.

    People have started arriving for a memorial service at St Andrew's Church in Kegworth to mark the 30th anniversary of the air disaster.

    It is being attended by survivors, families of the 47 people who died and members of the emergency services who were first at the scene of the crash.

    The service starts at 11:00 and will be followed by a walk to the Kegworth Cemetery where wreaths will be laid.

    Retired police officer Clive Sparling was one of the first on the scene following the Kegworth air disaster.

    He was just 20 years old at the time of the crash and says it was "hard to take in" the extent of the catastrophe.

    Mr Sparling, who was a civilian resource planner with the force, said he worked for 26 hours straight assisting other emergency service staff.
