    Police officers with a dog rushed to a golf club near Ilkeston yesterday following reports of people with spades entering the course.

    Following searches of the course and surrounding fields, the group was eventually tracked to nearby woodland - where it was discovered they were wildlife experts carrying out a newt survey, external.

    An eight-year old boy who spent his pocket money on a litter picker is inspiring others to join his spring cleans.

    Leighton Ollerenshaw, from Belper, goes litter-picking as often as he can and has won recognition from his local council.

    Leighton, who is helped in his efforts by his friends, said he just wanted to help 'the next generation' to have a colourful world.

    An anti-smoking group says its solicitors are looking into whether former Imperial Tobacco employees in Nottingham could sue the firm for giving away free cigarettes as a perk of the job.

    Ash believes former staff could make claims against the firm on the grounds it knew the product was addictive and harmful.

    The campaign group has urged ex-workers to come forward to discuss potential legal action.

    Imperial said smoking was a matter of adult choice and the health risks had been widely publicised for many decades.

    The firm's Nottingham factory closed in May 2016 and demolition work on the building began in December.

    A man has been charged, external following reports of shots being fired in Stapleford.

    Officers rushed to Meredith Court on Monday night after being alerted to the sound of gunfire.

    Nottinghamshire Police said a 22-year-old who lives in the same street had been charged with possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

    Two men, aged 18 and 23, who were arrested in connection with the incident, have been released while investigations continue, along with a 46-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice.
