A teenager who made off after crashing an uninsured car leaving his friend "gravely injured" in the middle of the road said it was the "worst decision of his life".
Details of the crash, which happened in the early hours of 5 December 2018, were revealed as Zaheer Patel appeared at Leicester Magistrates' Court and admitted several driving offences.
The 18-year-old picked up his friend at 03:30 after messaging her to see if she wanted to go for a drive.
Just minutes later the student, of Vicarage Gardens, Leicester, crashed into a kerb and telegraph pole before the car rolled several times, coming to rest on its roof.
Patel, who had not passed his test, crashed a Peugeot 206 on Thurncourt Road catapulting his friend, who was not wearing a seat belt, out of the boot of the car.
She suffered life-changing injuries and is still recovering at home after a four-week stay in hospital.
The court was told that Patel continues to "question why he did what he did" and loses sleep over the crash, "the worst decision he has ever made".
Magistrates told Patel that he was "on the cusp of going to prison" but instead was given a 12 month community order and ordered to carry out 200 hours unpaid work to start after his A-Level exams.
He was also handed a £120 fine and ordered to pay an £85 victim surcharge and £85 costs.

The blushes of some radiology patients in Leicester can now be spared as "dignity gowns" are now on offer.
Standard hospital gowns have a gap at the back and often leave patients bottoms on show.
Gowns that cover the whole body are now being piloted at Leicester General and Glenfield Hospital.
It follows a plea from a member of the Equality Advisory Group (EAG) representing the Federation of Muslim Organisations (FMO).
Just over 300 of the new gowns have been bought so far with funding from Pak Food Stores and the charity Rahma Mercy. Currently they're just available in the radiology departments.
