1. City council set for talks over tier 3 restrictionspublished at 13:16 British Summer Time 22 October 2020

    BBC Radio Nottingham

Nottingham City Council has confirmed it is set to enter further talks with the government today over the possibility of further coronavirus restrictions in the region.

David Mellen, leader of the authority, said he and the leader of Nottinghamshire County Council have received invites to speak to a minister this afternoon, where he said they will discuss the possibility of the area being moved into tier three and "a financial support package" to help businesses and residents if further restrictions are imposed.

He said: "We will be keen to robustly discuss and understand any impact of tier three given the approximate two-week time lag before we see any potential impact, especially as we are starting to see the numbers reduce now in the current tier two level."

  3. Covid leads to cuts to East Midlands rail servicespublished at 12:34 British Summer Time 22 October 2020

    Greig Watson
    Reporter, BBC News Online

Nearly 40 East Midlands Railway (EMR) services are being withdrawn or reduced, with the company blaming "a steep rise in Covid-related absences".

The new timetable will start on Monday, external with EMR saying the changes affect 37 services - about 10% of the total.

Bosses said the reduction was "designed to safely reduce the number of staff required to deliver its services".

Regional routes, such as Liverpool to Nottingham, Matlock to Newark Castle and Peterborough to Lincoln are most heavily hit, and some Nottingham to Leicester trains have also been cut.

Will Rogers, managing director of East Midlands Railway, said: "We have taken the proactive step to make changes to our timetable to protect our most popular services, including those that are relied upon by key workers or those who use our services to travel to work, school or college."

He said the changes will remain under review.

  4. Secret Santa scheme continues in memory of founderpublished at 12:16 British Summer Time 22 October 2020

    BBC Radio Derby

The parents of a Derby woman who died after contracting coronavirus are urging people to donate a present in her memory this Christmas.

Maria Lawrence, 48, started the Derby Secret Santa scheme to give people in the community a present at Christmas.

Her parents, Joy and Stan, only moved to Derby from the West Midlands last year to be closer to their daughter and help her run the scheme.

Instead, they've found themselves doing it without her.

Joy said Maria had been planning to expand the Derby Secret Santa scheme for 2020 to include more areas of the city.

Stan told BBC Radio Derby: "I just hope people go out, buy a little thing, find a drop-off point, put it in and just think about the person that started it and the poor person that may well be receiving it.

"It could be the only present they get this Christmas."

  5. Charnwood 'on the brink' of moving to tier 2published at 12:15 British Summer Time 22 October 2020

    BBC Radio Leicester

People living in the borough of Charnwood could soon find themselves under extra restrictions as the number of coronavirus cases in the area continues to grow.

Leicestershire's director of public health said the area is "on the brink" of being moved from tier one into tier two.

This would mean residents will not be able to mix households indoors and the rule of six will apply outdoors.

    LoughboroughImage source, Google

Latest figures show Charnwood's Covid-19 rate of infection is 282.5 per 100,000 people.

That's more than Leicester and Oadby and Wigston, which are both already in tier two.

Mike Sandys said the figures are partly down to students at Loughborough University testing positive.

He said: "If the government said 'Charnwood is in tier two', I could hardly argue with the numbers because they are the highest across Leicester and Leicestershire.

"Equally, there is a view that if you do allow for the cases in younger people, then do we give it another week and see if we can get the figures down?

"Clearly there's no getting away from it that Charnwood is on the brink and is under discussion - whether it tips over the edge is probably something we're going to find out in the next 24 hours or so."

Its wing was infected and contained maggots, said the charity.

RSPCA officer Rebecca Frost took the swan to a vet, who decided to put it to sleep to end its suffering.

She said: “It is so sad to see a swan in such distress. He would have suffered a slow and lingering death had we not rescued him.

“Fishing litter in our waterways is a major problem and it is so damaging to wildlife.

"I would urge people to be responsible and remember to take home any litter if you go fishing."
