  8. Councillor who set up fake meeting asked to resignpublished at 18:02 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2020

    Eddie Bisknell
    Local Democracy Reporter

A Conservative councillor who set up a fake meeting to avoid colleagues losing their seats has been urged to resign.

Last night Ockbrook and Borrowash Parish Council voted unanimously to ask for Mike Wallis’ voluntary resignation.

This came after he arranged a fake meeting two years ago when he was the chair of the parish council so fellow councillors would not lose their place for not attending meetings for six consecutive months.

Mr Wallis, who is also a cabinet member on Erewash Borough Council, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service he will “consider” his resignation from the parish council but would not resign from the borough council.

He said he fully accepts his wrongdoing, calling it an “error of judgement” but said the fake meeting never took place.

He added he was "sad" and "disappointed" he was being asked to step down.

“I did breach the code of conduct, I accept that, but there was no meeting ever held," he added.

The borough council’s standards committee ruled last month Mr Wallis was in breach of the councillor code of conduct and formally sanctioned him.

The councillors who Mr Wallis had intended to assist through the fake meeting have not been named.

  9. Son 'pulled out teeth when he couldn't access dentist'published at 17:20 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2020

    PA Media

A parent in Derbyshire has told Healthwatch England their son, who has learning disabilities, pulled out some of his own teeth when he couldn't access a dentist during the coronavirus pandemic.

The example featured in a report by the watchdog that sets out the serious consequences of people not being able to access dentistry care.

The authors wrote: "We have heard a few extreme cases when lack of access to dentistry pushed people to take steps which put their health and wellbeing at risk."

Healthwatch England said it had received an "unprecedented" rise in calls and complaints about dentistry.

It has called for more to be done to understand the long-term impact on people's dental health caused by the delays to care during the pandemic and for the government and NHS to address the problem.

An NHS spokesperson said: "The NHS has nearly 25,000 dentists offering care - the highest number on record - and during the first wave of the pandemic over 600 urgent dental centres were set up so patients could access urgent treatment, but like other services there is no doubt that of course the first wave disrupted some services.

"Dentists are seeing more patients for face-to-face appointments every month, and while practices are understandably prioritising urgent care... if a patient is worried about their teeth or oral health, or that of their child, then they should call their dentist."

The cost of replacing a Long Eaton primary school that was destroyed in a fire will be £5.5m, the county council has said.

Work is under way to appoint a contractor to take charge of the rebuild at the site Harrington Junior School occupied until the fire - started accidentally during refurbishment work - in May.

The authority will use £1.28m from an insurance payout, £1m of its own money and hopes to fund the remaining £3.22m from capital funding.

Both the county council and Derby City Council have since signed a pledge to have sprinklers in all new-build schools and primary and secondary schools undergoing significant renovation, refurbishment or extension.
