    BBC Weather

The weather will continue to be blustery today, with winds between 45mph and 50mph.

A Met Office yellow warning is in place for wind until 15:00 today, meaning strong winds accompanied by heavy and blustery showers may bring disruption to parts of England and Wales.

Here, it will be unsettled at times but we should see the return of sunshine as we go through this morning and into this afternoon although there will still be some showers throughout the day.

The wind should ease a little bit this afternoon, but it is still going to be fairly breezy through to the evening, with temperatures expected to get up to 9C or 10C.

  7. Coronavirus vaccine centre 'thousands of doses short'published at 15:18 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2021

    Amy Orton
    Local Democracy Reporter

A vaccination centre closed for more than a week is still "several thousand doses short" of completing the rollout for one cohort despite the recent reallocation of some doses.

Geoff Hanlan, a Charnwood-based GP, said the site based at the borough council offices has been closed for 11 days and won't have enough jabs to inject all of those in priority group six, which covers all people between 16 and 64 years old who have underlying health conditions.

He told a meeting of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) medical centres "have had further difficulties with vaccine allocation over the weekend", which is "leading to a lot of very angry phone calls from patients".

Last week it was revealed some hospital hubs will also scale back the number of vaccines given, with some temporarily closing or operating fewer hours.

Rachna Vyas, executive director of integration and transformation for the CCGs, said officials "have done everything that we can" but that a "constraint" around vaccine supply continues, while chief executive Andy Williams said the introduction of second doses "means that we need all our outlets to be going full tilt to keep up".

Chief nurse Caroline Trevithick said last week that supply will "increase tremendously" from 15 March.

"That will coincide with additional cohorts being open so that we have got the people coming through as much as we have the vaccine coming in," she said.

  8. Plans for power station's future discussedpublished at 15:07 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2021

    BBC News

An energy company said it is "at the early stages of exploring options" over the future of Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station, which could be put forward as part of plans for the UK's first commercial fusion reactor.

On Tuesday Rushcliffe Borough Council passed a recommendation to put forward "a non-binding expression of interest" in using the site as one of the potential locations for a nuclear fusion reactor.

The government has put forward more than £200m towards its Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) programme, which hopes to provide electricity from a fusion reactor by 2040.

Uniper, which is working with Rushcliffe and Nottinghamshire County Council on the proposals, said the STEP bid "is one of a range of options being considered for development of the site".

A Derbyshire man has created a moving model in tribute to Captain Sir Tom Moore.

Eddie Wadsworth said he built the carousel using recycled materials and a battery-powered motor.

The 86-year-old, from Swadlincote, made headlines in 2019 when he converted his mobility scooter into a tank to raise money for the Royal British Legion.

He said his latest creation, which took about a day to make, is to "honour a legend" who will "always be associated with a special achievement".

Captain Sir Tom Moore, who raised almost £33m for NHS charities by walking laps of his garden, died with coronavirus at the age of 100 last month.

It said he died after suffering a suspected heart attack while out jogging.

The impact of Adam’s death has been felt right across the university for many reasons. That he was so young, with his whole promising future ahead of him is undoubtedly one. That his death was so sudden and - as a sports player and fitness enthusiast - so unlikely, is another. But it is the loss of someone who so completely embodied all that we try to inspire in students at DMU which has affected us most."

  11. Lockdown treats blamed for pet food shortagepublished at 11:05 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2021

    Amy Woodfield
    BBC News

A pet food manufacturer has said increased pet ownership and people giving treats to their pets “to build a stronger bond” during lockdown has contributed to an issue with supplies.

Some UK supermarkets have warned of a shortage with some dog and cat food products following an "unprecedented" rise in pet ownership.

Mars Petcare, which makes brands like Pedigree, Whiskas and Dreamies, said it is “working tirelessly” to meet new demands for its products, including making significant investment at their Melton Mowbray plant.

Helen Warren-Piper, General Manager of Mars Petcare UK said: “The shortage of pet food pouches currently being seen across the pet food manufacturing industry in the UK is not specifically due to supply problems or difficulties in sourcing ingredients or packaging, it’s due to an increase in demand for pet food, as the UK’s pet population increases and feeding habits change.

“For example, with more pet owners working from home, more people are ‘treating’ their pets to build a stronger bond.”

Pet owners are being advised to buy only their pets' usual food and not to bulk-buy.

  15. Covid: 'New areas of concern' identified in Leicestershirepublished at 17:07 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2021

    Alex Regan
    BBC News

The town of Ashby and other areas of Leicestershire have been cited by public health officials as coronavirus "hotspots".

Leicestershire County Council said Ashby, in North West Leicestershire, is a "new area of concern" as well as the villages of Donisthorpe and Blackfordby.

Last week, North West Leicestershire had the highest seven-day coronavirus infection rate in England, according to Public Health England data.

Latest figures in the week up to 5 March show the area's rate has dropped to 132.2 per 100,000 people - from 198.8 in the previous seven-day period - but it remains in the top 20 areas for high infection rates.

The director of public health for the council, Mike Sandys, said: "Ashby is definitely starting to creep up the rankings and some of that is simply down to where it is on the map. It borders areas which have high rates, including Coalville and South Derbyshire."

Council leader Nick Rushton added: "People are relaxing their guard and it's easy to think it's all over – but it clearly isn't and we can't afford to undo all the good work through complacency so I'd urge all [of] North West Leicestershire's residents to continue being vigilant."

Elsewhere, a Coalville barber shop owner has been fined £1,000 after police and council officers visited on Saturday.

Police said officers found "evidence of hair cutting" at Turkish Hairlines in Ashby Road following a tip-off from members of the public.

In addition to the fine for the business owner, four customers were given £200 fixed penalty notices for the breach of lockdown rules.

Hairdressers and beauty salons will not be allowed to reopen until 12 April at the earliest, in line with the government's roadmap for lifting the lockdown.

North West Leicestershire District Council leader Richard Blunt said: "The rules are very clear, but this business owner chose to ignore them. They are now paying the price for the disregard shown for the health and welfare of their customers and the local community."

Inspector Herchy Boal freed the bird before giving it a quick health check and letting it fly away.

She said she hoped the experience meant the pigeon had "learned a lesson and will be more careful when going near chimneys in future”.
