  3. Travel: Severe delays on A40 following accidentpublished at 17:51

    The M40 exit slip road is closed at junction 7 of the A40 in Thame because of a serious accident.

    There are also delays on the A40 northern bypass in both directions at the Cutteslowe roundabout in Oxford.

  7. Open University defends regional centre closurespublished at 17:35

    The Open University (OU) has defended its decision to close regional centres around the country, which will result in a nationwide staff walk-out tomorrow.

    OU vice-chancellor Peter Horrocks says: “This is an important decision for the university and its students as it means we can now introduce much-needed improvements to our student support services - something which simply isn’t possible across dispersed, smaller offices.

     "No local services to students, including individual support for disabled students, will be withdrawn, however we recognise the impact this will have on affected staff."

  8. Police warn of Black Friday crimepublished at 17:28

    Thames Valley Police has warned that key shopping days, such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday, are also marked out in the diaries of criminals.

    The force gave advice for shoppers on its website, external to avoid being duped by online scam artists or pickpockets.

    Det Ch Supt Ray Howard says: "Shoppers are advised to remain vigilant and take precautions to ensure they do not fall victim to online fraud or theft, whether it’s this weekend or in the run-up to Christmas.”

    New technology at the Diamond Light Source site in Harwell is being used to support  scientists who are developing ways to provide life-saving drugs.  

  10. Union says Open University staff have 'no alternative' to strikepublished at 17:04

    The union representing Open University staff says its members have "no alternative" but to take strike action.

    The University and College Union, external president Pauline Collins says the university's decision to press ahead with cuts is "deeply disappointing". 

    "Nobody wants to take strike action, but we have now been left with no alternative. The university needs to listen to our concerns and abandon these damaging proposals."

  11. Nick Clegg and Nigel Farage join Oxford Union debate on EU membershippublished at 16:57

    Students at the Oxford Union debated Britain's membership of the European Union - voting overwhelmingly in favour - on Monday.

    Adam Fleming from the BBC's Daily Politics show went along to watch the event at the famous debating society, which pitted the former President of the European Union Jose Manuel Barroso and the former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg against the UKIP leader Nigel Farage and the Eurosceptic Conservative MP Sir William Cash.

  12. Oxford Open University staff to strike tomorrowpublished at 16:51

    Staff from the Open University, external in Oxford will join a nationwide walk-out tomorrow after the university's council voted today to go ahead with plans to close seven regional centres.

    Oxford staff will also strike on 2 December over the cuts which they claim will put more than 500 jobs at risk. 

    The seven centres earmarked for closure are in Cambridge, Leeds, Bristol, Birmingham, Gateshead, London and Oxford.

  13. Rapist Joseph Tsang to be extradited from Hong Kongpublished at 16:45

    A convicted rapist from Oxford has agreed to return to Britain after he was arrested in Hong Kong on an extradition request.

    Joseph Tsang, 31, of Sandy Lane was convicted in August at the city's Crown Court of two counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault.

    He had fled before his trial and was sentenced in his absence to 15 years in prison. He is expected to be returned within three months.

  14. Christmas lights festival attracts 50,000published at 16:32

    More than 50,000 people enjoyed an illuminating weekend in Oxford thanks to this year’s Christmas Light Festival.

    A range of shining events included a lantern procession featuring 180 children from eight Oxford primary schools, a Christmas market, art installations throughout the city and DJs and projections at Oxford Ice Rink.

    One of the highlights was a series of light projections on the Clarendon Building in Broad Street. The show, called Re:action, was by artist Dan Shorten of Anomic Multimedia.

  15. Travellers on cycle track 'moved on'published at 16:14

    Travellers who had illegally camped along the Marston Ferry cycle track in north Oxford have moved on following a court order. 

    Oxfordshire County Council had brought court proceedings against the community who had arrived on the road last month. 

    The travellers had until 12:00 to leave, and the county council confirmed this has now happened and that the area would be cleared.

  16. Oxfordshire Mental Health Partnership launchespublished at 15:55

    The Oxfordshire Mental Health Partnership has launched today, meaning six organisations from the NHS and the charity sector will work more closely with each other to provide mental health services in the county.

  17. Cyclists urged to 'be safe, be seen' this winterpublished at 15:46

    "Be safe, be seen" is the message to cyclists from Oxfordshire Fire & Rescue Service as part of a campaign just launched for this year.

    As part of a list of safety tips, external for bicycle trips, the service wants make sure cyclists have working front and rear lights and reflectors as the days become darker sooner.

  18. Blue-eyed bunny Bob seeks matepublished at 15:11

    The RSPCA in Oxfordshire is appealing for a home for Bob, a lonely blue-eyed rabbit who is seeking a female mate.

    The RSPCA's Stephanie Bush says: "Bob is a very nice neutered male rabbit. He is quite friendly and is happy to be petted and stroked. 

    "Bob is a bit lonely at the moment so he is interested in finding another friendly female bunny. He is around one to two years and would suit most families." You can contact RSPCA Oxfordshire here, external.   

  19. Furniture fly-tipper finedpublished at 15:00

    A repeat flytipper who dumped furniture in an Oxfordshire country lane has been ordered to pay more than £1,000 in costs and fines.   

    Freddie Fuller, 32, of Alderley Close, Carterton admitted the illegal act before Banbury magistrates and was caught after being traced via an address left on one of the dumped boxes.

    He confessed to dumping items including pine furniture at three separate locations between Alvescot and Shilton earlier this year. 

    Fuller was fined £650, ordered to pay £733 in costs and a £35 victim's surcharge for fly-tipping rubbish, carrying it without a waste carrier’s licence and disposing of commercial waste incorrectly.
