  1. RAF bases secure after defence reviewpublished at 09:57

    Two of Oxfordshire's RAF bases are not expected to suffer any cutbacks following the defence review. 

    David Cameron has promised to spend an extra £12bn on military equipment

    By 2016 there will be 14 Voyager air-to air refuelling planes at RAF Brize Norton, and by 2019 they will also have 22 A400M Atlas planes.

    Andrew Dorman, professor of international security at King's College London, said: "Brize Norton is an absolute key base, you’ve got strategic lift going through there… Benson, in the short term, the Puma force will be staying there, and they’re moving some of the Chinook force into that."

  3. More than 200 people with HIV virus in Oxfordpublished at 09:30

    Oxford has more people living with HIV than virtually anywhere else in the South East. 

    Latest figures show that 231 people have the virus in Oxford, and public health chiefs in Oxfordshire are urging people to get tested for the disease.

    Mara Ranieri Davey, the Oxford Centre Manager for HIV charity the Terence Higgins Trust, says: "Oxford has a large demographic of varied people. We've got black Africans and men who have sex with men in a higher concentration in the city area than we do in the outlying counties.

    "Because those are two communities that are still greatly affected by HIV, you're going to have more people living with HIV in this city."

    For most of us across Oxfordshire it's a fairly dull and damp start, with quite a lot of low cloud.

    Any sunshine will be fleeting, and there's a fairly brisk northwesterly wind that will feed in a few showers as we head through the day.

    Not everywhere will catch a shower, and we could see a little brightness this afternoon, but given the strength of those winds it's going to feel quite cool, with highs of about 9C (48F).

  8. Elton John 'thrilled' to play Henleypublished at 08:09

    The opening headliner at next year's Henley Festival will be pop legend Elton John.

    He will perform on the festival's Floating Stage on 6 July, organisers reveal this morning.   

    Elton John says: "I am thrilled that I will be able to say I have played the beautiful Henley-on-Thames." 

    The five-day festival, which started in 1983, features music, comedy and dance and is expected to attract about 35,000 people.
