    Two men who were canoeing on the River Cherwell in Oxford had to be rescued by Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue after getting into difficulties on the swollen river.

    Firefighters threw lines to the men, one of whom had pulled himself on to the bank with the second stranded in the canoe, and helped the pair escape the water.

    An Oxfordshire village is being given £20,000 to encourage people to use its train station.

    Great Western Railway is donating the cash to Tackley - halfway between Oxford and Banbury - to put on events and projects.

    It's coming out of a wider £2.2m customer and communities improvement fund.

  11. 'Shaken baby' expert case 'unrelated to John Radcliffe work'published at 16:56 Greenwich Mean Time 11 March 2016

    The misconduct tribunal, which found a doctor who practises at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford misled courts in cases where parents were accused of killing their children, is unrelated to her work at the hospital, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust insists.

    The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) ruled that Dr Waney Squier had given irresponsible evidence outside her area of expertise.

    The Thames valley has been revealed as one of the areas with the highest rates of cases of scarlet fever.

    Antibiotic treatment should be given to minimise the risk of complications, but there is currently no specific vaccine for scarlet fever

    Figures from Public Health England, external show 14.3 in every 100,000 people have had the illness since September in our area - the fifth highest regional rate in the country behind the East Midlands, Cheshire and Merseyside, Yorkshire and Humber, and the North East. The disease mostly affects children under 10.

    There's been a sharp increase in cases across England - with more than 6,000 reported cases since last September.

    Dr Waney Squier, an expert witness who has been found to have misled courts in a number of "shaken baby syndrome cases", misrepresented evidence and overstated her expertise, a tribunal found.

    The BBC's health correspondent Dominic Hughes explains that though Dr Squier holds views that are contrary to the mainstream on shaken baby injuries, it was her conduct rather than her position on the subject that was at fault.
