  4. Flying Scotsman to run on Severn Valley Railwaypublished at 17:50

    The newly refurbished Flying Scotsman locomotive will make its first appearance on the Severn Valley Railway for over 20 years as part of the heritage line's Autumn Steam Gala.

    The gala runs from 22 - 25 September, and tickets for trips on the Flying Scotsman will be available in the Spring.

    The engine, which was retired from service in 1963, has been restored at a cost of £4.2m for York's National Railway Museum (NRM) in a shed in Bury, Greater Manchester.

    Villagers in Shipton, between Church Stretton and Bridgnorth, are trying to solve a 100-year-old mystery and trace relatives of a man listed on a local war memorial.

    They know that Captain Walter Lloyd from the Welsh Fusiliers was born in Italy and lived in Scotland before being killed leading an attack at Gallipoli in August 1915.

    But they don't know what his connection was to the area and why his name is recorded at St James's church in the village.

  6. Carpet jobs could move to Telfordpublished at 17:36

    The carpet maker Brintons says it might move staff from its Kidderminster factory to Telford as part of a restructuring process. 

    The company has announced it's cutting 65 jobs in Kidderminster and has started a period of consultation with staff.

    It says where possible it'll look for voluntary redundancies, as well as offering new positions in Telford.

    Four people have put their names forward to stand for election in the seat left vacant by Shropshire Council's former leader Keith Barrow, who stepped down at the end of last year. 

    The Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats and the Green Party are all fielding candidates in the Oswestry South ward, with the election taking place on 4 February.

  8. Shrewsbury Town sign Richie Wellenspublished at 17:15

    Shrewsbury Town have signed the veteran midfielder Richie Wellens on an 18-month deal after his release by Doncaster.

    The 35-year-old been expected to join Shrewsbury's League One rivals Oldham Athletic, where he had been on loan.

    Wellens has made 686 appearances in a career that began at Manchester United and has since taken him to Blackpool, Oldham (twice), Doncaster (twice), Leicester City and Ipswich Town.

  11. Christmas surge for A&E departmentspublished at 16:40

    The trust that runs Shropshire's two main hospitals treated more than 3,000 patients in A&E over Christmas, external, figures from NHS England show.

    The statistics reveal that between 21 December and 3 January, 3,256 patients were treated at the Royal Shrewsbury and Princess Royal hospitals' A&E departments.   

    That compares with 2,150 over the previous fortnight.

  12. Practice day for cycling event in Shrewsburypublished at 16:24

    Today is practice day for the National Cyclo-Cross Championships taking place in Shrewsbury this weekend. 

    A number of top riders are coming, including the British champion for the past four years, Ian Field, Commonwealth games medal winner Liam Killeen and World Cup winner Nikki Harris.

    The organisers describe the sport as a cross between cycling and cross country running, with riders having to carry their bikes through especially rough or muddy terrain.

    Racing on the 3km (1.86 mile) course at Shrewsbury Sports Village starts at 09:30 tomorrow.

    The three-day Shropshire Chess Congress gets under way today and the organisers say the field will be the strongest since it started in the 1970s.

    Five grandmasters and three international masters will be taking part in the event, which is being held at the Wrekin Housing Trust offices in Telford.

    Previously, it's never had more than two grandmasters taking part.

  14. Sport: Shrews lay on free transport for FA Cup tiepublished at 15:50

    Shrewsbury Town are laying on free transport for Sunday's FA Cup tie in Cardiff. 

    The coaches are being provided by the club as a show of appreciation to supporters who went to last weekend's 7-1 defeat at Chesterfield.

    The club's also worried that fans could struggle with public transport, after the game was moved to Sunday evening for live television. 

  15. Shropshire man prepares to say goodbye to death row killerpublished at 15:38

    A Shropshire man who has written over 400 letters to a killer on death row in the United States is going to visit him on his execution day next month.

    Jan Arriens from Bishop's Castle has been writing to Mike Lambrix since 1991 and said it would be "ghastly to say goodbye".

    Lambrix has been on death row since 1984 for murdering a couple in Florida and is due to be given a lethal injection on 11 February.

    A meeting between MPs and rail bosses has broken up with a promise to get back together in a month's time.

    They were gathering in Oswestry to see if it was possible to add Gobowen to Virgin's Shrewsbury to London service.

  18. Telford and Wrekin Council 'not sitting on a large pot of money'published at 14:47

    Telford and Wrekin Council has hit back at the Chancellor's suggestion that councils use more money from their reserves.

    The councillor responsible for finances, Lee Carter, has told BBC Radio Shropshire the authority only has £4m that isn't already allocated.

    Councillor Carter said the authority had worked hard to become more efficient and isn't "sitting on a large pot of money", with much of its budget already allocated to projects.

  20. Photos: Telford council housing development taking shapepublished at 14:18

    It's six months since work started on a council-funded housing development in the Randlay area of Telford and 31 homes have been built so far.

    It's aiming to build over 400 eventually, at a number of sites around the borough.

    The idea is a simple one. The council pays for the homes to be built and then rents them out, to make money from them.

    It says the building work can kick-start the development of brownfield sites in the area and help the local construction industry too.
